Optimus III

Is this laptop no longer available?

I was looking to purchase one towards the end of this year, but it has gone from the website within the last day. The optimus IV costs about £50 more, and I don't feel that is worth it for an extra 100mhz on the gpu. (The only difference between gt650m and gtx660m)

Thanks, bencot.

(Meant to put this in sales advice, which I had open in another tab. Move if necessary)

You're correct that it's no longer available.

That's not the only difference between them, and besides the price difference isn't only for the GPU - the chassis is different as well, having an extra RAM slot over the Optimus III plus a few other extras.

They both have 384 shader cores, 128 bit bus width.
gtx 660m is clocked at 835mhz, gt 650m is clocked at 735mhz.
I know the ddr3 version has lower clocked memory, but as far as i have found, ddr5 version has same memory speed as the 660m.. The difference, realistically, is 100mhz.
There is probably something i have missed but both cards acheive roughly the same result in 3dmark11 when clocked the same.

Problem is im not interested in an extra ram slot, the optimus 3 fitted what I needed perfectly and i cant really afford the extra £50. :(

GT 650M DDR3.

GTX 660M DDR5.

With DDR5 you will get approx 25% more performace in GW2 with a GTX 660M the £50 is worth it.

The 650M in the Optimus III did infact use 1GB of GDDR5, not DDR3.

The Inferno uses 2GB of DDR3.

The ONLY difference in the GPU between III and IV is an extra gig of vram, and the small clock speed bump.

I do however believe the Optimus III had a few design flaws/QC problems, such as strange noise from the fan. Maybe if you ask PCS via phone, they might be able to help. They did for my mate.

I suppose one advantage if i've read correctly elsewhere is that the 660m isnt soldered down like the gt 650m, so there is the possibility for upgrades in the future.
Can anyone clarify if this is true or not?

I've just had a look and it does come in two versions, soldered down and an mxm board.
