I'm most likely to go for the standard Optimus XI, because I strongly prefer physical mouse buttons below the touchpad. The main hangup I have is that I can't configure it with a Ryzen CPU; the R7 4800H appears to be more power efficient than the i7 10750H, with better multicore performance.

I presume the i7 is the main reason why my configured Optimus XI is more expensive than the XI Pro.

What I am interested to know is how the thermal performance of each laptop compares, particularly in relation to fan noise. The standard XI has a thicker chassis, so that may work in its favour for cooling performance, but I can't tell how it'll work in the real world from specs alone.

I envision that I'll be limiting framerates (to a multiple of the screen's refresh) and lowering settings where necessary in games, to keep the fan noise at an acceptable level. I presume a laptop with better thermal performance will be able to have lower fan speeds at equivalent settings. I'm mainly curious how the XI and XI Pro compare in this regard.

i have standard optimus XI (i7 10750h, rtx 2060,1x16gb ram).. fan noise and thermal performance are just normal (im not gonna say fine but just normal because fan become very loud at maximum speed or even not imo.. but i guess its normal for a gaming laptop) but i can set by myself fan speeds in relation of how much cpu/gpu temperature reached.
when playing games cpu can reach 90/95° if fan speeds are setted below like 85% more and less and 85% is pretty loud but you wont hear it too much if you wear headset and temps will stay below 85°C, at 100% fan speed is even more loud and temps will be below 81°.
there are differents power mode: like silent mode which limits performance and fan speed max to 35% which its make literally no sounds, im using it right now at 2 am and only sound i hear is me typing on keyboard and my breath lol. Performance mode you can guess it max perf but fan noise, power saving mode for more battery autonomy but still fan can be noise despite reduced performance and balanced mode which it will be all automatic in relation to your temps.

you can still buy a cooling pad and reduce slithly fan speed if the noise is your biggest issue

Thanks very much for the reply. My main concern with fan noise is making sure that people can't hear it outside the room I'm in. Silent mode being inaudible is a good sign for general purpose use.

For gaming, I presume you usually have unlocked framerates with your comparison of temps to fan speed? If so, limiting framerates may give me decent gains there.

I'm also hoping to undervolt the CPU/GPU. Apparently this could be tricky with 10th gen Intel depending on the laptop manufacturer. I read in a thread a few days ago that it might be possible with PcSpecialist. It would be helpful if someone could confirm that undervolting the i7 10750H can be done with the Optimus XI.

It depends of people, for sure they will hear it especially if the place is quiet but its not annoying according to my family (i often play in living room) they just don't care too much since they watch TV or something. its will be annoying (in my opinion) in a very quiet place like in a room where someone is sleeping or in a small library for example..

yep, silent mode make you reduce by a lot fps of course. i tried once to play Paladins with silent mode which i had 80/90 fps instead of usual 140/170 fps, cpu and gpu remained under 90°C, but Paladins is a light game and 80+ fps is really good if you are not a competitive player.

About undervolt i don't know, never tried and i don't need it
