Over the top?

Thoughts on this unit? Is it over the top or okay? My last laptop was a Dell and has lasted me 10 years so time for an upgrade. I'd like to say I do some heavy gaming but probably more Adobe work and a little fps on the side.

So :
As i said, do you really need the i9 ? because it will heat like hell ^^
I'm not sure that the killer wifi card is really a must have, if i'm not wrong, the intel one is really nice (in fact, i have the base card and it work fine)
About the ssd, i'd take a 970 samsung, if i'm not wrong, they are the best one available
You should really take the silver (or even the gold) warranty, at this price

this look better to me (but i'm not the most knowledgeable here ^^")

Then, 2 more questions,

Do you really need a laptop ? because a this price, you'd get a combo desktop/screen that may be better
Do you really need a 17" screen ? because it look like pcs is doing a 15" DTR with an amd cpu

I think the first question is one of those two questions you Tron has asked at the bottom there and that is with a £3k budget, do you absolutely need it to be a laptop - especially as you are selecting a desktop replacement laptop that is not really designed for portability at all.

You get such a great value desktop, 1440p screen and even peripherals and probably still come out with some decent change with that budget.

Thanks for the replies, yes it needs to be a laptop, I travel with work so need a laptop, when I am traveling it is onboard a ship so the weight or portability of it doesn't really matter as once it's set up, it's staying like that for a few months.

I don't NEED an i9, there just didn't seem to be much of a price difference so figured that I'd be as well getting the better processor. Again the 17" was just due to the little price difference and the benefits of a bigger screen for Adobe and gaming.

The fact is, if i'm not wrong, the i7 is better because it heat less ^^"

If you're willing to go to the 15", the destian look amazing (and far less expensive ^^)
(clevo chassis and amd desktop cpu ^^)

Anyway, just to know, what's your maximum budget ? (you may want to upgrade to the 2to 980 ssd)
And if you're sticking with the 17" recoil, i think the specs i made are more balanced

I don't really have a budget but the less I can spend the better, I initially didn't want to spend more than £1k, but here we are haha!
I'll have a look at the Destian but on the surface of it, it looks like something someone would get out to quote me for new double glazing... Maybe it's the lack of RGB lol

It's true that the screen is smaller and with a smaller resolution too
I think you may ask pcs to put a 970 ssd instead of the intel one (even if it's not on the configurator yet)

But, may i ask you if you already have a "legit" OS ?

I was going to buy an OS separately, probably windows 10,then free upgrade to Windows 11. Is there much difference between the RTX 3080 and 3070?

If my memories serve me well (someone posted a youtube link with my original thread about my purchase, if you want to dig a bit), the 3080 is somethink like 15 to 20% better
So it's up to you, but remember that the gpu is the first bottleneck on laptop, so i give you the advice i was given, "buy the best one you can" ^^

For the OS, i think pcs are going well with the price, maybe consider buyinf from them ?
you'll be sure that it will be a legit "non used" windows (as i could see on some other threads)
And i agree with you about win10 ^^

So the destian would be no use as it only offers upto a 3070 and dose not support a 3080.

Who knew buying a laptop would be so difficult

Buying a laptop is easy
Buying the perfect one for your need is more complicated, indeed ^^

About the 3070, the 3080 and the chassis choice :
The destian is easier to use, because it only use a 230v charger, so, you may find a usb-c charger (as you mentioned in my review thread)
The Cpu is more optimized I think (but maybe not better in terms of performance)
But, it's true that the Gpu is less powerfull and the screen have a smaller resolution
The recoil need 2 chargers, so, I think you'll never find a usb-c charger for it
The Cpu may be more powerfull
And you have a better screen and a more powerfull Gpu

As i'm not really sure what your needs imply, the choice is your ^^

What about the IONICO? It has the full 3080 (not the MAX-Q), it has an Intel processor so can charge 100w thunderbolt charging, I would have to take the hit on the speed of the m.2 drive, and the chassis looks a bit cheap when compared to the RECOIL. Still means I can have a 17" screen, 165Hz i7 11800H.
What are your thoughts on the heat of the IONICO when it's in full swing gaming?

I don't really know
But the chassis is really thin, so it will heat ^^"

And 2 more things, the ionico is a laptop, and not a desktop replacement
and if you're going with this laptop, considere taking the amd cpu ^^

If I take the AMD CPU I cant get the thunderbolt interface though. I noticed the thickness of the Ionico and did think that it would overheat which is why I started looking at the Recoil.

Why would you choose the AMD CPU over the Intel CPU?

Use substantially less power to achieve the same performance, plus less security issues that can't be patched.

It's weird, all my desktops have been AMD and all my laptops have been Intel and I don't really have a preference, that being said, the ability to charge via thunderbolt is a bit of a deal breaker as I dont want to get 3 years down the line and be unable to replace the charger.

You'll always be able to buy replacement chargers, I can still buy ones for my laptop I bought in 2014

UserBenchmark says the Intel processor is better performing? Is that wrong?
Userbenchmark is completely incorrect, it doesn't benchmark anything, it just applied a value to certain physical characteristics and adds up the score.

At best, it's incorrect, in actuallity, it's just downright lies, and has been unanimously panned across the internet.

There's various info on userbenchmark here:
