Ok, final selection I hope

I've upgraded the 2TB SSD for a 4TB SSD.

Is there a better version of the 4TB SSD I should look at?

I have 20 years worth of GoPro videos on an external 3TB HDD. If I'm working on them where would you store them on the pc? On the SSD or the HDD?

thanks in advance

You've downgraded the power supply. I would not do that. Principally because you want the headroom of extra capacity, but even more because the RM version is old and the RMe version (the 750W one) is new and much superior. It is worth a few extra quid.

The storage drive is fine. As for your existing files, if I was currently working on them, they'd be on the SSD. If they weren't in frequent use, I'd put them on the hard drive. Either way, there should be backups (plural!). I would suggest using your existing external drive and an online backup service.

Basically, the SSD is both faster and more responsive. The hard drive is cheaper, unlikely to fail suddenly (though SSDs are pretty good in that regard now). Editing video off a hard drive isn't much fun, though it can be done in a pinch.

Not sure this is quite right, an SSD is still a digital medium which means either on or off, they have no sectors like an HDD that fail bit by bit, with an SSD it’s working one minute and completely dead the next.

Or has some new tech hit that can separate the individual DRAM chips from the overall partition?

I mean they don't fail with the frequency they used to, and often firmware will detect incoming failure. But yes, they are still prone to complete failure. But in any case, You Must Have Proper Backups.

Yeah, 100%, they're not like they used to be with failures in the main, but it is a generational thing, like with the Samsung 990 Pros being far more prone to failure, it's still something you have to be mindful of from model to model.

I've still never experienced anyone resulting in a failure who actually got any SMART warning before the failure. I still think it's a bit of a BETA future hope.

I downgraded the power supply because the system prompted me to do it. But I've put it back to the 750 RMe.

Thanks for all your input, very useful for me.

It didn't prompt you to do that, it's amazing how many people misread that, it's purely telling you the lowest you can get away with, but that's only relevant for very minimal basic office PC's or super entry level systems.

Definition of prompt: to move to action (Oxford Dictionary).

"Please consider our advice below before proceeding:" = sounds like a prompt to me, if, at the least, a subtle one. An encouragement to look again. It's not "purely telling you" anything, it's asking you to consider the information and make a decision based on what we are telling you. It's prompting you to think again, though without any obligation.

Does it matter?

Yes, it matters for anyone reading this down the line so they don't make the same mistake.

Oxford definition: To move to ACTION

"Please consider our advice below before proceeding:"
There's no action here, it's merely asking you to consider before proceeding, not stating to take action. If it were stating an action it would say something like "The PSU rating is too high for your configuration, please lower it"

I appreciate it may sound obsequious, it's just important to highlight so future people who may come across this don't make the same assumption.
