Photography desktop

Hi

I posted a question on a photography forum I use asking for advice on a new desktop pc, numerous folk recommended this place.

So, I'm looking for some advice on a new desktop pc. The choice is vast and a bit confusing. " For me"

I use the pc for general internet/email. Light use of Open office/excel. I enjoy photography so the pc would need to run Photoshop cc.

I am pretty confused over the processors e.g. i5 i7 i9. My current pc is an i7-3770 @3.40GHz

64 bit System

16gb ram

2tb sata drive

Windows 8

12 years old.

This as been a great pc and run Photoshop cs6 for ever. It is still quick on start up and great but It's time I started to use Photoshop cc plus the newer cameras require software not able to run on this system.

As you can tell I don't change my tech often so I would like to buy something that will last a while.

I am thinking to spend upto £1500.

My thoughts, off my limited knowledge are the pc would need.

Highest processor eg : Intel i9

64 Ram

1 tb ssd

4 tb sata drive

No idea as regards graphics apart from reading about Gpu ?

As you can see my knowledge is limited but I would really appreciate anyone wishing to point to a pc on the site that they think would fit, from my description.

Feel free to tell me i'm completely wrong with the above.
All advice is welcomed.

Thanks

Gaz

Unless you're doing something that requires lots of cores (like video editing) then the i7/i9 chips will be wasted...and even then we'd probably advise going to a much more efficient AMD set-up for that sort of usage.

I've put in a low-ish level GPU to allow for accelerated effects in Creative Suite, but if you're not doing any heavy effects that require this acceleration in Photoshop then you could save a good chunk by removing this. But at a start something like this should give a significant boost to what you're currently using...and I'm sure one of the resident Photo-editing experts will come along and tweak it.

Hi Tony

Thanks for your reply and explaining the processor needs for photoshop.

Thanks for putting that together for me. I'll follow the link and try to get my head around some of the jargon. Things are starting to become clearer to me now.

@TonyCarter

Me again. Have you any experiance with the case ? It looks very open on the front. I'm just thinking is that just gonna collect lots of dust.
The inside of this current pc case, which is enclosed, is very dusty.

There are two ssd drives. Could you explain what these are used for. My limited knowledge thought one helped with start up times ?

If the 3000D is just a smaller version of the 4000D then whilst it looks open at the front there is a dust filter as well which can be removed, cleaned and replaced.

It’s open to allow good airflow.

That's certainly a factor. Having the OS on it's own dedicated drive reduces the queue of commands so it's not getting additional requests for stuff unrelated to the OS.

But it's also so that you can keep any data, or game installs separate from the OS, so in the eventuality you have to reinstall windows (which WILL happen, no matter what you do), you can wipe the OS drive without affecting any of your data or having to redownload all your games. You simply clean the OS drive, reinstall windows and point the apps back to your secondary drive for games and data.

Helps with ongoing maintenance, plus increases performance.

Hi all.

Thanks for all the help with this.

Whilst on the website yesterday I spoke with someone via the chat box.

Unexpectedly he said do you want me to quote you. So I said yes. I realize and appreciate that you guys have helped me out with this already but he offered so I thought why not.

There seems to be endless ways you can configure a pc and everyone as there own idea.

The spec is below. I wondered if people think this is an okay build.

Hi
Just to update this thread, as you've all been kind enough to help me with this decision.

I ordered the pc as per Tony's post above, other than I changed the case for the 4000 model to accommodate an additional hhd from my old pc.

Thanks again
