Hi

I'll just preface this by admitting my knowledge and exp with this kind of thing is rather lacking.
So please be don't hold back with explanations and reasoning etc, I really appreciate any help.

I'm looking for a laptop primarily for gaming along with some everyday use and photo/ video editing.

Games I would be looking to play are: Total War Warhammer, LoL, BG3.

I'd also like a machine that will age well, I understand tech evolves superfast and we are probably one the verge of a big upgrade to this kind of tech but If I could still be playing recent releases in 4/5 years I would be really happy with spending this kind of money.

I don't want to go higher than £1,400.00

I have highlighted some sections (In Red) that I would especially appreciate advice on but its all up for debate so fire away.

I can't generally help as laptop tech is out of my experience, however, 2 things that jump out:

- Yes, Silver Warranty is highly recommended.....only £5 more for a lot more benefit'
- The Intel Optane memory is a waste as neither of the HDDs you have selected are mechanical drives.

I would also question the HDD set-up you have there....the main drive you will want Windows on is the M2 drive (the faster of the 2) so the SSD will be a storage drive but it has very little storage. If the 2nd drive is purely to be used as a storage drive, then I would drop the SSD and go for a standard drive with 1TB or 2TB storage...if needed the M2 drive can be dropped to 512

Hi,
Ty for the reply!
-Silver warranty coming up!

-mechanical still includes SSD drives from what I've read online? Have I misunderstood this?

-you say the ssd drive has little storage... I'm confused by this as it would be have 1tb?
I know I want a ssd drive on my m2 to store all my games on so they are faster right?
My thinking was was just have the os on the main drive and store everything on the m2?
-what specifically would you reccomend I change it too?

Thankyou!

SSD’s are solid state disks, they’re just banks of memory chips. HDD’s or mechanical drives are a physical disk like a CD that spins.

you have a very small SATA ssd (old style replaced by m2 drives) and a larger m2 drive. It would make more sense just to have one m2 drive for OS and programs and an HDD for data.

You don’t need the Optane, it won’t benefit you.

you can do much better for the same price, I’d recommend the vortex chassis.

Hi,
Thankyou for the reply!

Ok so are you saying:
have no drive as the "1st main drive"
Have a 1tb ssd drive as my 1st m2 slot
A smaller drive for data as my second m2 slot?

You're right. This chassis offers better value. Thankyou

Your main OS drive should be an M2 drive, then you’d normally have a large HDD as data drive. Most data doesn’t benefit from being on an SSD, HDD will be fine.

Right, do you mean something like this? With specificying the os goes into the M2 .

You don’t need more than 16Gb RAM, any more just won’t be used.

I would choose a 7200rpm HDD

I’d get the better thermal paste

Otherwise it’s perfect!

The performance difference between a 5400rpm drive and a 7200rpm drive isn't astronomical but it is noticeable. However, it depends on what you plan to store on there. If the drive will be mostly used for video files and/or audio files then a 5400rpm drive will be fine, but if it will be used mainly for storing image files then a 7200rpm drive will provide noticeably better performance.

Got it, many thanks. I do work with a lot of images and videos so it seems like something that is relevant to me.
