Please help me.

Howdy good people, and apologies in advance for the essay. I will include a TL;DR section in the end.

I know that this is a PC Specialist forum, but I trust that I can safely post this huge dilemma of mine and receive objective replies.
After years of saving some money every month (why thank you basic UK salary), and endless times of deciding to buy a laptop and then feeling bad about the amount needed to purchase one and regretting it, it's finally the time to get one with installments.

I wrote this prologue in order to emphasise on the fact that the laptop I'm going to buy will have to be something that will first of all last a few years (4-5 at least) and secondly, that it's of high importance for it to be the best for my budget. That's the reason this has took me so long. The fact that it needs to be the one.

Budget and key point: So my budget is £1500 give or take, and I came up with the configuration posted below. The key reason I chose this configuration is the aluminium chassis, as one of my highest concerns is the temperature and cooling behaviour in general, and I trust that aluminium will be a far better component than plastic chassis, such as the Proteus series' one.

Explaining some of my options: In order to be within my budget, I removed the operating system (they're damn expensive aren't they) and I'll just install Windows 10 via USB and with an eBay bought key. I also chose the 2070 instead of the 2070 Super as I think that they're not that different in terms of performance and the 2070 will be perfectly fine.

Questions: Don't get me wrong, I'm just inexperienced with PCSpecialist so I'm asking out of curiosity and not of bad intent, but why aren't PCS laptops not marketed (BF incoming and no offers here) or reviewed (there is a pretty small amount of YT reviews and most of them are outdated) more often? I guess because this would infer costs that then would have to be transferred to the products? Also, I did of course choose the arctic thermal paste in my configuration but, what about the cooling technology of the laptop? Is it top notch?

- Last and most important question is stated after the configuration -

My quote:

Most important question:
As we're strangers, please be objective in the arguments here, as I have no way of knowing who I'm speaking to.
So, Asus RoG Strix G15 and Acer Predator Triton 300 are two of the most popular gaming laptops out there.
Of course there are BF offers, and I have to say they're good.
Link to Asus
Link to Acer (1300 without the bundle)
I know that both of these have plastic chassis (or at least not aluminium, they have fancy ways of describing plastic now), but Asus specifically is known for its good build quality and experience in the gaming laptop industry. It also looks damn good (I don't mind pink, and leds are lit).

The question is: Is my configuration much better than these two options from Asus and Acer? And why? Is the 10875 that I chose in my config much better than the 10750 that the others have in terms of performance and longevity? In my head, Asus wins in looks and overall gaming experience, Acer in value for money as it's the cheapest of the three, and PCS in specs and customer service (? - not experienced but I think that they're top notch in after sales care). I don't know who wins in cooling technology and temperatures though, which as I said above is definitely going to impact my final decision.

TL;DR version:
Comparison between this and this and the above configuration. Which one would you buy and why?

I will really appreciate all the replies and thoughts. And thank you in advance for spending your time into reading/replying to my post.

Have a good night all!

Hello and welcome! :)

I'm not the hardware expert on here so I'll leave it to others to pass comment and answer your questions. As for knowing who's advice you can trust, you'll soon spot those people who do know what they're talking about but I'll mention @SpyderTracks, @Scott, @steaky360, and @Nursemorph in particular. One good way to tell how much you can trust any given member is to hover over their avatar. A box will pop up showing you when they joined, how many posts they've made and their reaction score. Here's yours for example....

Clipboard01.jpg

The reaction score is the number of 'likes' they've received. Those members who have been here for many years, who have made a large number of posts and who have a high reaction score can generally be trusted. That's not to say that new members with few posts and a low reaction score can't be trusted, but if you get a divergence of opinions then the reaction score information will help you better decide who's advice to listen to. :)

Well this is definitely a well considered thread so thanks very much for the background on your thinking, it makes understanding your personal perspective far better.

First of all we would need yet more information to get some clarification on the best spend for you.

What are your uses? Is it for gaming only? Is it a production laptop or etc?

Does it absolutely categorically have to be a laptop? Laptops are not good value for money and they don't offer upgrade paths. Once the Laptop is at the end of the tech's useful life (namely the GPU) it's time for it to retire as a whole (either hand me down or other uses etc) and you're then into an equivalent spend to stay relevant. With a PC you can upgrade the GPU to keep up to speed for longer (normally accepted to be 10 years).

If your use is gaming, are you gaming on a monitor or just the laptop screen itself? Have you considered your workspace area and how you will utilise it? If you have a secondary monitor, what model is it? If you are considering another monitor, what are you considering and what is your budget.

Getting illegal keys from other sources cannot be discussed or advocated in any way. It really isn't a good idea to go down this path as you could potentially end up with an unsupported OS without knowing it. We would always recommend doing it right and getting the OS license from M$ or a reliable source (PCS). We cannot force this upon you of course, but it's all that can be said on the matter really.

Lastly, if you could post up the configuration link at the bottom of your list that would be really helpful. When in the configurator there is a "Post to forum" button. This is what you use. Simply copy ALL the text, including the URL, and it lets us go in to view easily.

I missed that bit about 'an eBay key'. If you use an illegal key then PCS won't offer you any software support at all (they are Microsoft partners) and that means we won't be able to help you with software issues on here either I'm afraid.

Microsoft don't do cheap keys for the general public. The keys you see for sale on eBay and the like are typically volume licensing keys that Microsoft sell to a business in order to license all their PCs with one license. These keys cannot be sold to the general public and if you use one then Microsoft will catch up with you.

It is worth mentioning that if you have an old laptop or desktop currently running Win10 that you will no longer be using you can transfer that license across to your new machine.

Don’t waste money on eBay keys as they can’t be trusted and could cause you no end of trouble going forward such as no formal Win10 updates which will then leave your laptop/PC at risk.

I’m not sure if I can be trusted as generally only been posting when I’m about to buy and when I see a post I think I can help on but to give you some hints on what I have learnt re laptops and PCS. I’ve just come back for my second gaming laptop.

- PCS are competitively priced for what they offer. Whilst some prices may appear more slightly more than some competitors it’s usually at the expense of some of the insides. PCS let you adapt the components to what suits you and your budget and in most cases it’s quality items. With competitors it’s pre built and usually one or two good components to highlight the item and then one or two lower spec items. So you might see a good graphics card but a slightly poorer processor and a small hard drive or you might see really good processor but a lower grfx card etc etc.

- the forums are a great place to tweak your settings and get advice. Even on the limitations of what to choose from in a laptop compared to a desktop the advice here is great to optimise your machine.

- PCS let you open the case and add things (carefully) without voiding warranty. Some competitors don’t. Obviously undue care and attention is not covered but if you wanted to add that second M2 or increase ram etc then you can.

- always consider the extra £69 for the two year gold warranty on a laptop. Even consider the extended warranties offered. It’s not like a desktop where if a component goes you can get away with just changing that item, if the grfx card goes on the laptop that’s fixed to the motherboard so it’s a complete replacement.

- laptops cooling is good but you are ultimately responsible to keep it that way. Good ethics and protocols on cleaning out dust etc Are a must. I personally would also say get a laptop cooler fan to sit laptop on. Helps dispense the hot air.

- the laptop will last if you look after it.

Be useful to know what your are planning on using it for to be able to give any more advice.

If I think of anything else I’ll come back later.

Andy.

I'll wade in here.

First of all if you want this configured for longevity I would change that Samsung EVO drive for two 1 TB PCS drives.
They are slower but still fast enough. I personally would want to have double the Storage.

Next up I wont specifically talk about the competitor models as I have no experience with them. I do know a thing or two about PCS laptops though.

Is there a reason you chose the 15" Vyper over the 17"?

Cooling: The Vyper has an extremely efficient cooling system which works in two ways.
Firstly as you already alluded to it has a metal alloy chassis (I actually believe its Magnesium alloy which is lighter than aluminium but I am not 100%). The metal alloy chassis acts as a big heat sink which is why parts of it can get quite toasty.

Secondly the fans work in a way which I haven't seen before. Traditionally with laptops fresh air is drawn in through the bottom of the chassis and the hot air is exhausted through the back and side vents.
The Vyper draws fresh air in through the keyboard and the bottom of the laptop giving it a much more efficient supply of cool air.

I got the Vyper after owning a Vortex IX which is a far thicker laptop but it was plastic and had a conventional fan setup. I was actually shocked that the Vyper CPU and GPU ran at least 10C cooler in the same use cases. The Vortex had the same GPU but a gen 9 I7.

Customer Care: The first thing to remember here is that PCS build laptops to order by hand they do not have vast stocks that they can just ship over night. This coupled with the pandemic the world currently finds itself in means customers need to be patient when waiting for their laptop to be built tested and delivered or in the unfortunate event that an RMA is required. That's just life at the moment unfortunately.

That being said in my experience if after sales support is required generally PCS are superb. I have had 4 different laptops in the 8 years I have been a customer and unfortunately I have had to send 3 back for RMA. However I am still buying their laptops and will continue to do so because I have had such a positive experience with their customer service team (and because frankly you cannot get this PC performance for the money anywhere else). A huge factor for me is the fact that they have an open case policy and allow customers to carry out maintenance and upgrades on their laptop without voiding the warranty.

In fact a couple of years ago one the of the techs got me to completely take apart the screen on my Defiance to try something before I sent it back to them. Low and behold It fixed the screen and saved me being without my laptop for weeks.

I had so many problems with my last laptop that even though it was over a year old PCS gave me the option of an entirely brand new laptop of a different model or a full refund.

Conclusion: Clearly I am a happy PCS customer and I would highly recommend the Vyper (with the SSD change I mentioned). If size isn't an issue I would recommend looking into the 17". I have one and its lovely.

Wow guys thanks so much for the responses! Apologies for the slight delay in my response, I usually get online late due to work schedules keeping me busy.
I'll try to cover all of your questions/points:

@ubuysa thank you very much for this info! It will of course come in handy! Although, to avoid misunderstandings, I need to reassure everyone that I value all of your opinions equally, and I only mentioned the "objectivity" part because some people may be working for PCS and I compared two competitors' laptops with one from PCS.

@Scott thank you very much for your message. The use will be primarily for gaming as I have a work laptop for my work. Of course that includes general use but not video editing/production etc. Example gaming titles would be Witcher 3, AC Odyssey, RDR2, Cyberpunk and most likely other games TBA.
Does it absolutely categorically have to be a laptop?
Unfortunately yes, reasons are: 1. I haven't researched anything for a PC and the components are kinda different (CPUs, motherboards etc) and I don't have the time to do this, and 2. portability and space, as I am a tenant in London and since I live in a house with other people I don't have enough personal space for a PC and I also move houses every few years when my monthly spending budget allows something better. Plus the overall budget for a decent config, which I think that adding the peripherals won't be cheaper than a laptop.

If your use is gaming, are you gaming on a monitor or just the laptop screen itself? Have you considered your workspace area and how you will utilise it? If you have a secondary monitor, what model is it?
I have a second monitor from work (Samsung C24F390 24'' Curved Led Monitor) which is great but to be honest I'd be fine with the laptop's monitor, it's not on my plans -at least the short to mid-term ones- to use an external monitor.

Lastly, if you could post up the configuration link at the bottom of your list that would be really helpful. When in the configurator there is a "Post to forum" button. This is what you use. Simply copy ALL the text, including the URL, and it lets us go in to view easily.
I did use the Post to Forum option, but you are correct there's no link. Thanks for the heads up, here it is: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/quotes/1903743/

For the MS Windows 10 key, you are right and luckily I have other options as well. I have friends who are still university students and their unis offer free keys. I might just get one of them as they aren't cracked versions.

@andjef796 cheers for your reply Andy! I totally agree and yes, I will consider the 2 year gold warranty option. In terms of looking after it, I'm a very strict user of electronic goods in terms of maintenance. I am always careful and nothing I had was broken due to my carelessness. I don't even eat anything when I'm using a laptop. Cooling pad will be an extra purchase as well. I just didn't include it on my quote because I didn't want it to skew the budget as I wasn't considering it as part of it, and this would ruin the comparison with Asus ROG Strix.

Hey @barlew ! Thanks for replying! The reason I didn't choose the 17'' model is solely the price. I unfortunately can't afford a laptop nearing 2k quid.
The metal alloy chassis acts as a big heat sink which is why parts of it can get quite toasty.
You got me a bit confused here. Do you mean that having aluminum chassis is worse because of the heat sink effect?
This coupled with the pandemic the world currently finds itself in means customers need to be patient when waiting for their laptop to be built tested and delivered or in the unfortunate event that an RMA is required.
I don't mind waiting at all (I've waited quite a few years now, another few weeks won't be a dealbreaker). Glad to know your CS experience! I know that PCS stand for their reputation!

@Nursemorph , thanks for your message and the links! I did see the BF offer for Defiance but yes, unfortunately that was out of my budget, plus it didn't have the arctic cooling paste included.

Thanks again everyone, appreciate it and hope I've covered everyone with my replies!

Morning,

Sorry I probably didn't explain this very well.
It is a good thing and designed this way purposefully.
As the chassis itself acts as a heat sink it means there is a far greater surface area to dissipate heat which results in the laptop running cooling being more efficient.

It is £80 more than your budget but if you can stretch to it I would recommend this 17" build:

Also I appreciate that build is already slightly over budget but I would also highly recommend you get a Gold warranty. The last thing you want is for your laptop to get to 13 months and your GPU burn out. That will be an extremely expensive repair bill.

Similar spec to above but being a little more frugal....

500GB is plenty for a system drive, especially when you have a nice fast loading secondary available. The 2nd M2 drive is ideal for fast loading games. I would also consider a standard 2.5" storage drive but given the uses are fairly standard for gaming you may not need it at all. See how it goes.

16GB of RAM should be more than enough for the foreseeable future. We aren't at the point where you will get any meaningful difference above 16GB. I'm still on 16GB on both of my systems and the only reason I was even contemplating more was FS2020.... which I'm pleased to report has no issues with 16GB (or even less). With HD screens you're not likely to need more RAM or vRAM during the lifetime of the system.

Silver warranty - I always recommend the silver warranty but it's not often I recommend going higher. This is my personal preference and maybe it's just because I haven't been burned. In my experience any tech that is purchased, if it's going to, will fail within the first few months of heavy utilisation. You would need to be VERY unlucky to get caught out and even if you do, there needs to be justification for the failure not to be an inherent design flaw or other. For the sake of £60 it's possibly a minor consideration but I haven't gone wrong with this thinking so far (touches wood).

@GeraltofRookia @Scott's suggestion is way better if you don't need 2TB.

Hey guys, thanks again to everyone for your contributions.

After all I did really good to ask here, as it's very interesting that with almost the same budget for a 15'' I'll be able to get a 17'' one.
Tomorrow's my final decision so I'll order one of the two builds you guys mentioned.

Have a good night!
