Thank you SpyderTracks, I will do that. What surprises me is that Microsoft, whilst clearly aware of this problem, are still sending out updates wit the faulty component. If we can delete than KB number then why can't they.

As with most windows update bugs, it only affects a small subset of users. They’ll only pull an update if it’s a systematic issue.

Plus there are a lot of security updates in them if you check and these you probably need.

Printer has worked fine for a few days. I had paused Windows Updates for 7 days, the only option. It is still paused, I just checked. Printer working OK this morning, tonight 7.30pm - problem back. On checking it out I found the defective update KB4560960 is back again!
Deleted it again and all is fine! Persistent little devil ain't it...how it got back when paused I don't know.
Yes Ubuysa, I have not deleted any security updates only this problem one.

Whilst updates are not paused, it will keep installing, that’s how automatic updates work. Once you delete it, if updates aren’t paused, it will just reinstall.

You must be on a very old version of windows if you can’t pause updates longer than 7 days though.

The OP is on an old version of Windows. As I've already suggested, the OP should upgrade to Windows 2004, it does not have the printer problem and the two suspect updates are not required on 2004.

The version of WINDOWS is whatever was loaded to my PCS computer when I bought it a few years ago - I can't remember just when, but it's certainly not as far back as 2004. Anyway I will look to update it.

Another result of the Windows update which caused my printer problem: my daughter's Lenovo laptop apparently had the same update on shutting down yesterday. Today it opens only as far as the Windows page after which she only gets the revolving circle and can't progress further. Could anyone please tell me how you go from there. Of course, not being able to enter Windows you can't get to the Control Center, the BIOS or anything else. Am I missing sometrhing?

Windows 2004 is the latest version of Windows 10. The numbering system they use is the year (20 for 2020) followed by the month of release (04 for April). The version you're on is either 1903 (March 2019) or 1909 (September 2019) because the failing updates apply only to those two versions.

I would suggest that you download the Windows Media Creation Tool, insert an 8GB min size USB stick (which will be erased), run the downloaded tool and tell it to create an ISO for use on another computer. The tool will download the Windows 2004 installation files to the USB stick and make it bootable.

Now you have a choice. The most reliable way to upgrade is to clean install by booting the USB stick. The advantage of this method is that you'll get the most stable and reliable WIndows installation. The disadvantage of this method is that everything you currently have will be lost and you'll have to reinstall all your third party programs again and restore your data from backup.

You can upgrade your existing system using the USB stick, simply by running the setup.exe file on the USB stick. The advantage of this method is that it will retain all your existing programs (possibly, it depends on whether they are still compatible) and data. The disadvantage is that it's far from uncommon to find all sorts of niggly problems afterwards. Either method will install Windows 10 version 2004 which does not require the two problem updates that you're struggling with.

BTW. You can find out what version of Windows you have by entering the command winver in the Run command box....

Thanks so much Ubuysa, your advice is invaluable. The trouble is I am somewhat a novice when it comes to computer technology and am a bit afraid of doing much for fear of screwing up. I'll carefully follow your instructions in the link and see how far I get!

If you decide to clean install by booting the USB stick come back on here first and I'll give you more detailed instructions.
