Problem with PCI-e card USB-C 20Gb/s card, with certain specific files only.

Oh dear. It cost less than £40 though, so compared to the price of the new PC it is nothing.
It may have just been my case, you may have a very different experience, for me it was on a monitor and they couldn't replicate my issue, even though I'd given them precise instructions and it did exactly the same thing when I got it back. I found a workaround so it wasn't a deal breaker, but most other places would have just replaced it without asking any questions.

Just had an email from scan.co.uk.
Testing of the card showed "Data transfer stability intermittent" and they are sending out a replacement.

That's good news then, do let us know if the new one has solved the problem (once its turned up and you've tested it of course)

Card arrived and installed and I have a few times copied the 1TB folder of 40,000 images and Lightroom data from the external HD through the expansion card's 20Gb/s USB socket with no problems. So fingers crossed. Although I had deleted the files that were causing problems.

Amazing! Well done, and I'm really pleased Scan didn't make it difficult to return, that's great news (y)

Ha!

An update. Just to refresh memories I had an external SSD on which I was unable to read a few specific files over a USB-c gen 2x2 20Gb/sec connection in a card in my PCS desktop although I could read them over a 10Gb/sec gen 2 connection with no problems. I RMAd the USB-c gen 2x2 20Gb/sec card and all seemed well.

However, some weeks later I was again unable to read a file, a different file, over the 20Gb/sec connection. Foolishly I simply sighed and plugged it into the 10Gb/sec socket and forgot all about it as it worked flawlessly for several months.

However, a handful (about 20) of files then became corrupt and a Windows diskcheck revealed errors that could not be repaired.

So I am now engaged in RMAing the external drive - I suspect this may have been the culprit all along, as some people suggested here some time ago. But I don't understand why it worked OK over a 10Gb/sec connection but not 20Gb/sec.

I don't believe this! While waiting for the RMA of the external SSD I bought an identical model to use in the meantime, storing all my photos. Yesterday I edited about a hundred photos via the USB3 socket on my laptop. Today I have plugged it into my PC specialist desktop PC and the catalogue is corrupted. I have restored the catalogue. Then tried to delete some pictures and got a message telling me the images cannot be deleted. So I found one of the images in Windows and tried to delete it but got the message that it could not be deleted. There are 28 images that cannot be deleted. I tried to repair the drive via right click -> properties -> tools -> error checking and it found errors but was unable to repair them - same thing happened with the previous external SSD.

I have since dragged off all the files, replaced the handful of corrupted pictures from a backup (Lightroom told me which pictures couldn't be accessed) and formatted the SSD as NTFS. Error checking as above reports no errors.

So I am wondering how both external SSDs became corrupted. I wonder if the cable that I use to connect to my laptop could be the issue? Or some similar connection issue? I do have another cable which I will start using. But I'm wary of doing much more work on the images any more!

I've got a similar drive, albeit in 1TB size...and it's been fine for years, swapping between Mac and Windows PCs (formatted as NTFS too, with a NTFS driver installed on the Mac).

I'm just wondering how full the SSD is, as I don't think they like being 'too full'. But whether that just affects performance, or relates to data loss I don't know.

It's only about half full.
