Ram slots B1 and B2 not working

However, once I plugged in (only) the power cable and tried to boot it, it turned on, and off, and on, and off...It never even managed to post, or even beep. How on earth did this thing make it through testing? After some fiddling with the ram modules, it sometimes managed to start beeping a couple times before it starts turning off and on.

It turns out that having anything in the B1 or B2 ram slots causes this problem. Moving the RAM slots from A2 + B2 to A2 + A1 results in a stable system with both ram modules recognized and working properly. But of course I don't have dual channel in this configuration and I still can't use the B1 + B2 slots in the future.

It came with the newest available BIOS version. Is there anything I can try to fix this? Or is it time to RMA?

Phone PCS tomorrow when they're open to discuss; they can either troubleshoot, or arrange for RMA if that's required.

Not sure if you said explicitly but I take it you tried it with only 1 module at a time, testing each of the 4 slots in turn?

Calling is kind of hard for me since I'm at work and not near my computer during the week, but I sent a message through the site and they told me to clear the CMOS settings. Which makes sense, but didn't change anything. I've requested an RMA for now. I might try checking for bent CPU pins or something, but honestly I've kind of given up. Hope the PCS gods can fix it :)

EDIT: Oh and yeah, I tried with 1 module at a time. Having anything in B1 or B2 makes the PC malfunction, regardless of what is in the other slots.

Hah! Fixed it!

It turned out that the CPU cooler needs to be inserted with plastic spacers. Without them it's almost impossible to insert the cooler, you need to press with a lot of force. Whoever assembled my PC apparently used some strength to get it into place, sort of crushing my CPU into the mobo. Apparently this caused the issue, since after inserting the spacers myself there are no more issues.

I did re-insert the CPU to see if there were any bent pins (not that I could see). Do I need to reapply thermal paste? I'm currently running a million memtests. The CPU doesn't throttle (stays on 4.3ghz), nor does it go over 60 degrees, with 100% load on the CPU. ...I think it survived all the thrashing about then...?

I would report that to PCS in detail. If they have a builder who is doing this they need to know!

Definitely get it logged with PCS! As well as the issue of how the PC was built, if you have a fault further down the line, being able to point to this may be important especially if it's outside the standard warranty period.

Yup, I lodged a complaint about both things. Between the complaint and the other technical support messages I sent, I think it's been logged enough :)

I'm glad you've raised this with PCS, this is dangerous to the build and completely unacceptable.

Well done for spotting it, just a shame it's happened in the first place.
