So had this for a little bit now so time for a mini review.

I've had a couple of Clevo laptops from PCSpecialist now and they've always looked sharp and understated. Not sure who makes the chassis for the Recoil (TongFang I think?) but it's equally as good. I think they're a newer company so how they'll do in the long run remains to be seen. Looks and feels good though.

Seen some mixed views on the keyboard but it's nice. Full RGB is a nice touch. Never used a mechanical keyboard before to be honest but it doesn't feel much different to any other.

Since my last machine, SSD prices have fallen quite a bit. Didn't expect to put so much SSD storage on this at first but it's worth it. From a 120gb upto 540MB/sR | 450MB/sW SSD to a 1tb upto 1800MB/sR | 1800MB/sW SSD. Pretty impressive. Everything just loads so quickly.

The 2070 is great for gaming. Handled everything I've tried so far. Most recently been playing Metro Exodus which looks amazing on the display (I like the new trend of narrow bezels). Great for older games as well such as CS:GO where you can really appreciate the 144hz screen (Maxed out and doesn't drop below 144. Not unexpected but feels great to play). Speaking of gaming, the thermals are strong as well. Exodus is the most demanding game i've played so far but the GPU temp tops out at 74c. CPU runs a little hotter (Didn't log it so can't remember) but I've undervolted it which does help. Interestingly, it's delivered with a -0.50v undervolt out of the box. I've got it down to -0.140 without any issues.

The thermals are good but that's in part because the fans can work hard when they need to. When under load it can get loud. Use headphones if you need to do something demanding. You'll want to anyway because the speakers are pretty quiet. They sound "ok" but there's no real volume there. (I highly recommend Dolby Atmos as well. Never tried it before but games especially really seem to benefit from it)

The lid is also a bit of a fingerprint magnet, but other than that, can't fault it really.

Chassis is definitely Tongfang, good job with the review. If you have some spare time, you could run some benchmarks on your machine and share your results. What did you use to undervolt CPU to -0.140 ?

I will try and do this when I can. Unfortunately I had to request an RMA today though. No post at all, no display and after a few moments it'll restart and do it all again. Fairly sure it's hardware (Can't get into the BIOS or anything anyway) so I don't want to go taking apart a brand new laptop. Better leave it to the professionals. Back on my Defiance for now.

I used Intel® Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel® XTU) for the undervolt by the way.

I have the Recoil II 17.3" 2070 on order at the moment, hopefully it should be here with me by the end of the week.

You may be able to help with something I have been unable to figure out. Does the Recoil II 17.3" come with a light strip at the front of the chassis (as the 15.6" Recoil II does)? I see no mention of it on the product page, but models of competitors builds with an identical Tongfang chassis do come with a light strip.

I think I read somewhere that the hardware is available, but maybe the software to control it is not. Could you or anyone shed any light on this?

Yeah the lightstrip is there. Can't remember if the software has an option to control it though, sorry.

Light strip is there and controllable using the provided software, played with it on mine.

Returned today. As I suspected it was hardware (Motherboard infact). Hopefully it'll be good now again for a long time. Smooth RMA service from PCs.

What time spy scores can you get? Some owners are getting reduced GPU performance until they put the machine to sleep and wake it up again, which seems to unlock the full performance. Timespy score jumps upwards of 1000.

7201 after a fresh startup.
6917 after putting it into sleep.

5%ish? Margin of error I guess. Multiple runs it'd probably average out.

Now 7242 after an undervolt + fresh reboot. I don't think I'm having the same issues as others.

Hi, I'm one of the people that have, to what it seems, a defective laptop. Can I ask which build number your nvidia driver has and what settings have you put it on?

Also, have you installed the drivers from original vendors or from the download page in your PCS account?

Thanks

Hi.

I think the easiest way to tell which chassis you have is the turbo/office mode button next to the power switch. Older ones put the fans into turbo mode while the newer one switches between "Gaming" mode and office "Mode".

I just use Nvidia Geforce Experience for my drivers. Currently 419.35. I also have physx set to use the 2070 in the nVidia Control panel.

Hi

I am thinking of the same laptop, to upgrade from my current Dell with gtx 1050

I actually play PUBG quite a lot and wonder how this machine would handle it.

also, is there any thermal throttling ?
