Some alternative suggestions:

Total War series of games... if you like setting up soldiers as a kid (like I used to enjoy) then this is kind of the same thing. When I first spotted the game I thought it was going to be terrible... played it and then got seriously hooked from there. Turn based, but the battles are real time.

This War Of Mine

Football Manager - if into Football of course

Stellaris - Space version of Total War almost.

Ghost Recon Wildlands - open world crossed with GTA jump in a vehicle and go approach. I find it a lot of fun.

Lord of the Rings: Shadow of War - Really good game, lot's to do and plenty of people to kill. Easy to pick up and just jump in. I'm not the biggest LotR fan either, so I hope that says a lot for the game.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll leave the Football manager to the other half though, not my bag :) The Shadow of War games are really fun, I played the PlayStation versions and would probably play again on PC if I can pick up a cheap copy of the first game.

The others sound interesting so I'll add to my list to check out. :)

I'm giving away a few games here if you want to have a look. They're all Steam keys redeemed through a site called Humble Bundle which offer cheap games with a portion of each sale going to charity. Have a look through the list in that post and you can use Steam's store page to read up on the games to see what you might like. :)

CD Key's Shadow of War Definitive Edition. £4.69? I've used them plenty of times in the past and always reliable.

This War of Mine is an amazing game... it may look like an old platform based game, but the scene it's set in, plus music and the way you really care for your characters made it a very popular and highly rated game on the PC.
Nice that's a good price from CD keys, they're good for a lot of discounted games and software

Ooo, somehow I didn't realise my new PC comes with Farcry 6 and 1-Year Founders Membership to GeForce Now, it's arriving via DPD tomorrow :D
The game was originally due out next month if I remember right, but has been delayed. You'll be able to use your code once it does release though. I got a code for it too!
