Recommended a 550W? Too low?

Hello, i've ordered this already so it's too late to change things, but getting worried as i've been doing some research and some people are saying 550w is too low to power an i9.

But other people are saying 550W is fine as long as i don't go overboard overclocking.

I originally was going for the 850 WATT but when i proceeded i got a popup telling me that it would be a waste of money and i don't need that many watts.

What do you guys think and is it wrong for them to suggest possible wrong information?

**I already have a hard drive hence why i haven't chosen**

The configurator will have stopped you ordering if the PSU wasn't enough.

That said, you may still want a larger PSU to give you more freedom for futureGPU upgrade options.

What's the system for btw?

To be honest, it was down to budget, but wanted something that i could upgrade in the near future.

I'm not bothered by case really, should i have been?

Can you still change orders even when payment method was finance?

It's for gaming, nothing hard core and possibly some editing.

I would cancel the order, and reconsider my options.

It's a poorly balanced spec and the i9 is a massive waste of cash for general gaming. If you had £3k for the system, maybe, but where affording it hurts the rest of your spec, it's not the right play.

Something with an AMD R5 3600, which has more or less unseated Intel i5s as the go-to for gaming, would be much more appropriate.

The case is an issue because the front is, as far as I know, pretty sealed off which is poor for airflow and would affect thermals, and therefore potentially performance, and upgrade options.

The i9 is not a gaming gpu, it’s designed for rendering workstations really. It’s a waste of money for gaming.

I imagine you'd need to reapply. But cancelling the order would be necessary to go for a different platform, which would seem to be the optimal choice here.

On the subject of PSU's, whilst some may say a 550W PSU is overkill for a 9900K there are two considerations

1. The CPU alone when hammered can draw 200W (https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-core-i9-9900k-9th-gen-cpu,5847-11.html), that rises to 250W if you overclocked to 5GHz on all cores (which some will do).
2. The GPU can also draw a reasonable amount as well, for a 1660ti, I'd say 200W is not absurd (THe TDP is spec'd at 120/130W, but as with CPU's I'm sure thats easily exceeded)

Then you have the desire to possibly not have your system pushing the maximum your PSU is designed for over longer periods of time. On paper it shouldn't matter, but it's always nice to have a bit of a margin, especially since you can get very short spikes in power when the CPU suddenly wants PL2 turbo on all cores.

Personally I'd say 550W is a good starting point, and would probably go for 650W or even 750W if I thought I'd be getting beefier graphics as my next upgrade.

I admit some of it is just 'feel good' but I've never had a negative experience of spending £30-£40 more on the PSU which seems cheap for peace of mind.

Swapping out the i9 9900k for a Intel® Core™ i7 Eight Core Processor i7-9700K (3.6GHz) 12MB Cache seems like the best option for me

I changed the case like you said to the CORSAIR CRYSTAL SERIES 460X RGB GAMING CASE

I changed the cpu to the Intel® Core™ i7 Eight Core Processor i7-9700K (3.6GHz) 12MB Cache ( I will OC this)

I changed the graphics card to 6GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 2060 - HDMI, DP - VR Ready!

I changed the PSU too CORSAIR 650W VS SERIES™ VS-650 POWER SUPPLY

I changed the cpu cooling too Corsair H60 2018 Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler

and thought i'd get 1x 120mm Black Case Fan (configured to extract from rear/roof)

I wasn't saying to change your components to be as close as possible to specs on this page:

I was saying to cancel the order, and probably buy one of the specs on that page through the links provided here.

This is because those specs are special offers, and are £1500-£1600's worth of hardware for a discounted price. As well as being fairly balanced specs.

If you didn't want one of those, we could suggest different, custom specs.
