RTX 2080 Super Max-Q vs RTX 2070 Super

I'm interested in the 17.3" VYPER and I'm having a hard time deciding between RTX 2080 Super Max-Q and RTX 2070 Super as I think they are both almost on par with each other. Which GPU is stronger and will perform better? I don't care about the price as long as I get the better performing GPU. Please help! Thanks in advance

I would go for the 2070 Super as the max q cards aren't all that good and are very expensive.

There aren't a lot of benchmarks available for RTX 2070 Super yet, so it's difficult to know for sure. Also the 2080 Super Max-Q comes in two variants 80W and 90W and I'm not sure which the Vyper houses, further muddying the waters.

At a guess though, I suspect the 2080 Max-Q performs moderately better. Perhaps around 5-10% on average? Which - when you consider that both GPUs will play any current game maxed out - is unlikely to offer a noticeable improvement. I know you've said that you don't care about the money, but considering the miniscule improvement the 2080 MQ may end up bringing, paying an extra £300 or whatever is a very poor value proposition. And that's not to mention that there will likely be some games where the full fat 2070 outperforms the 2080 MQ anyhow.

Also don't forget that the Vyper has Thunderbolt 3, so personally I'd get the 2070 Super and potentially put the savings toward an external GPU in the future (which can be connected via TB3)

Thank you for your help. I don't mind paying extra £300 for even a little bit more performance. I travel a lot so I can't carry an eGPU around with me. I think I will wait a little longer for the 2070 super reviews. Thanks again

Fair enough. It may be worth dropping PC Specialist an email asking which variant of the 2080 Max-Q the Vyper uses, 80W or 90W. Let us know what they say if you do! 🙂

I would phone them. They're running a short staff at the moment and emails may not be a priority. :)

Was a choice for me when I ordered, but based my decision on the non super comparisons (as its all that's out there really) on those the 2070 full is the equal to the 2080 in 95% of things, also remember the super 2070 is the equivalent of the 2080 non super in performance, so I went 2070 super, as I bet with a little tweaking it's going to get to the levels of the 2080 maxq anyhow.

I thought for the extra, the maxq variant isn't a good buy even in the slightest, if there's a couple and I do mean a couple of fps difference then I'll live with it.

So basically what you're saying is the 2080 Super Max-Q is better than the 2070 Super Max-P, even though it's by just a tiny little bit? Also how's the thermals on your laptop?

I've not had it delivered yet, but I'm not saying the max q is better or worse that the full fat 2070 super.

Just basing on the benchmarks of the non super cards it's not going to be a lot of difference if any.
