Rtx 3080 short supply upon launch.

I've been overdue an upgrade for a while now (still running a 2014 i7 4790k + gtx 780ti build) and decided that ampere was probably the perfect time. I ordered a new build from PC specialist but left out the gpu (thinking rtx 3080) knowing that I could easily install that myself upon release/after next pay day (also would allow me to pick the specific card/manufacturer I liked best). It's now looking like there are going to be shortages upon release, and ampere may have the smallest number of units ever produced for an Nvidia launch (due to Nvidia having questions over Samsungs low silicon yields). My next payday does not perfectly align with the 3080 release date, so I'm not going to be able to stay up all night refreshing webpages trying to get one of these cards the moment they become available. Because of this, it looks unlikely I'm going to be able to get one before they all sell out, and may have to wait some time before stocks replenish.

Pc specialist offer an upgrade system and they are a Nvidia partner, plus they don't sell to anyone who isn't buying an entire system or upgrading a system, so hopefully they may retain stock. So my questions are these:

Do pc specialist typically allow you to upgrade to the brand new gpu's as soon as they become available, or do they keep them for new systems?
If they do allow upgrades, are they known for retaining stock well, or are they too likely to be out of stock very quickly?

Many thanks.

I expect you'll just join the queue for one, there will most likely be a wait I'd expect especially if you're intending to buy on launch. There's been no word from PCS about whether they are going to keep them for new system orders or not, I'd expect you'll be able to ask for an upgraded card though.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see, and try and get one as soon as I can. If not, perhaps taking advantage of the crashing used 2080 ti market could be a temporary solution until 3080 stock becomes available.

I’ve sent PCS a tweet explaining I’m about to buy a whole new build and would like the 3080, I’ve said if I order a whole build today for example can I get the card either added on or bought after, I’ve also asked them how they are handling the stock of them... will wait and see as I’m about to buy a new build as well

I've already ordered my build with the assumption I can amend the order on the 17th. The URL on the amend page is exactly the same as the normal build page so they should go live at exactly the same time (fingers crossed).

If that doesn't work I'll have to locate a gpu from a 3rd party....

By tweet I assume you mean twitter.

i very much doubt they would give you a full answer.

there is a huge difference between potential order and actual order.

For example, if one of my employees answered a question like that in full on a public platform, they would be walking out the door.

Your best bet is via their online chat.

I would hazard an educated guess order of allocation will be new builds (that’s the biggest % of profit), then first come for existing customers where the system on record can be upgraded - that prevents laptop owners buying for others etc and also limit cards to specific ordered systems. Within that there is also likely commitment to resellers such as PC World etc.

As above. Amend the order as soon as the pre-release is available.

I'm not sure when PCS take the funds though, do they take the money on dispatch or is it as soon as you place the order? If it's the latter then you would need to wait till pay day before hitting that button. I think they will be sold out by 00:01 on the 17th though.

Hopefully it's not 1 min after release. Stress levels will be through the roof. The guy on chat did say they've got a "good few" so fingers crossed they last a little longer

Now that the new GPU’s (and soon new ryzen’s) are coming out I am looking to buy. I know the new cards will likely be hard to get hold of but if I am able to secure a card via 3rd party (assuming I can't get one quickly with yourselves), is it possible to send to you to put into my new build?
