RTX 3080 vs 2080 Super - should I amend?

Hi all,

I would like some advice from those better versed in PCs than myself. I placed an order on the 2nd October with a RTX 3080. I selected the newest GPU for longevity and wasn’t bothered by preorder. This said, I thought I might have to wait a couple of extra weeks. But now, looking in the forum, it appears others have been told (ordering before myself) they will probably have to wait months. News on the internet is not warming my mood either.

I’ve also heard of apparent technical problems? Moving on to my question:

Should I consider, or would you advise I downgrade to a 2080? Also how easy are amendments to orders? What happens regarding payments? Or refunds if it’s a cheaper part?

many thanks for your thoughts!

Monitor is a 4 year old 66hz 1080p - plan to upgrade at another point in the future to 1440p or 4k. Essentially aiming for something I won't have to upgrade for a while (computer wise), and expand on peripherals over time (new monitor etc.)

Can anyone advise weather swapping in a 2080 super would be a thorough waste of money? With the context of a new console generation and the big leap with 30xx cards? Is anyone in a similar position considering cancelling an order and waiting until things calm down then come back to PCS when there’s more certainty?

If you can afford it change to asus strix 3080 you MAY have a better chance of getting it sooner. You will still be in a queue though.

Its a shame that UK doesn't have a system like the one in America for Evga (think that's how you spell it) call the step up system.

Personally I would wait on which ever 3080 if its the future proofing you want. Although the 2080 should work no probs with the monitor you already have.

Thanks Crizzy - what’s your thinking behind this out of interest? The problem is it’s still up in the air and having to wait indefinitely makes me a bit concerned. Especially after paying so much money.

Also just thought - what are higher resolutions like to use? Worth it? I was planning to upgrade eventually hence the 3080, but if 1080p is adequate...

It stands to reason that the strix queue would be shorter as its an more expensive model however again this does not nessacerily mean that you would get it sooner than the generic card. I simply know its 10% smaller than the generic queue from what I've been told.

Ultimately it is still a guessing game.

I believe the term from 1080p 66mhz to 1440p 144mhz is the difference between night and day.

Also note that the 3070 can easily run 1040p 1080p. Is it the better value? No, but it's an cheaper alternative and better than 2080 ti and more than capable of running games on that monitor.

For 4k you will have to speak to moderators as they can better tell you what will and won't work.

Perfectly put. If you stick with your current monitor, the 1650 Super is all you’d need, if you go 1440p 144Hz with a 27 inch screen you’ll be matching up nicely with the upcoming 3060Ti. 1440p 144Hz with an ultrawide, the 3070.

What’s the situation with the 3070 stock? If you have an order placed and amend it when the 3070 comes out, what happens to your place/order in building?

Thanks both

If you have a 1080p monitor right now, its already a pointless purchase getting the 2070 super.
How far away is "somepoint in the future"? By then, regardless 1440p or if you cough up for a 4K 144Hz (which is what the 3080 is really for) supply should have improved anyway and prices settled.

You seem to be wasting money quite heavily here, I would go for the GPU that suits your current monitor ~(so a 1660 Super, or luxury at a 2060) and save your cash for when you actually upgrade the monitor.
The GPU's are likely to have changed in price a fair bit, and you'll probably have the full range all settled in (3060, 3070, 3080) by then if more than 6 months.

A 1440p 144Hz screen you are looking at 3060 or 3070 (3070 is a luxury here really)
A 1440p 144Hz Ultrawide is a 3070 or 3080 as a luxury
3080 is then 4K 144Hz

Its available on the 29th.
From what I've been reading up on Is that Nvidea has already started shipping these out so suppliers are already stocked and not the same debacle of the 3080.
Again there's no certainty unless PCS tells you they have them in stock. This is only from what I've been reading up on technology news wise.

Op says he is currently thinking about upgrading his monitor later.
Why would he upgrade for something to his monitor now, to then later on have to upgrade the monitor and then have to also upgrade the gpu again.

Doesn't make sense to me. Surely that's a bigger waste of money.

Didnt see the 1080p monitor was not a 144Hz, so a 1650 super is appropriatye, 1660 super a luxury.

Yes maybe for the monitor he has now.
OP clearly states he's thinking of upgrading in future.
Are you saying buy that gpu now. Then upgrade your monitor and then another gpu?

OP says "at somepoint in the future".... unless thats the next 6 weeks, its pointless.
If he has a graphics card that already runs the monitor, then dont buy a new GPU at all at this stage, just the build.

Paying for a GPU now, for a monitor that he may not even have months and months from now, is a bad move.
None of those prices will look remotely similar in 6 months time.

I could be wrong but I think this is the OPs first system which means he will have to get a gpu
