How reliable are PC specialist at recommending the correct PSW for your system?

The only reason I ask this is because I have a PC in the pipeline with a 3080. when I selected the components it said PSU wise I only needed a CORSAIR 750W TXm SERIES™ SEMI-MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET. but everyone is talking about trying to get a hold of a 850 watt as a minimum. or at least it seems that way.

We always overspec the PSU allowing for generous headroom to factor in upgradeability.

PCS will just factor in your current requirements.

I'd recommend upping it to 850w to cover future upgrades.

The FE 3090 has a special 12 pin connector on the GPU that's only found on that and the 3080 / 3070 FE. It needs a specific type of connector that doesn't come with PSU's or upgrade kits. The reason they did it is it takes up a lot less space on the GPU, so they're able to cram more onto the circuit boards to allow room for the new cooling solution.

Unfortunately we had been confident with an ETA that the supplier had given us, this turned out to incorrect and lead times for ordering the RMX 850 is now in the region of 4 months! It is complete madness and we apologise for any disruptions to orders.

As you can imagine all of our purchasing colleagues are seeking stock in the channels but most are coming up dry, this is likely due to the requirement of a higher wattage PSU from early findings with the 3080 and 3090 GPUs.

My pc( with standard 3080) went into building today . Ordered on the 22/09. It gotta be a lack of other components not just the 3080 holding up people’s orders . I’ve seen people post on this forum recently who ordered before me . I selected a psu 750 watt , which seems to be in abundance compared to the 850 models , well according to post earlier on this forum at least.Could be that and or cpu shortages .
Hold on in there people .

In building right now guys! 36 working days, liquid series and standard 3080. I'm not from the UK but followed this post since October 9th, and it has been very helpful. Hope you all get your pc as soon as possible :)

Lots of PSU's above 850w are all out of stock in loads of places. Just been on OC and the 850rmx isnt due in until April 2021

Anyone still waiting for their PC should see if everything is in stock as lots of stuff is running short or just not available at all.

That's hopeful I ordered on the 9 Oct and changed ages back to 1000 watt gold PSU. I hope mine starts moving next week. If accurate this suggests that the pre-order backlog was the major bottleneck and we may be moving through the queue quicker now they cleared most of that. Could be supply picking up too. I have made a prediction that it will most likely be here just before xmas or slightly after. In the next week or two would be fab though!

The Corsair 1000 watt gold PSU is in stock though isn't it? I will give them a call to check as well. It's just midly annoying as I only changed it to the more expensive model as they incorrectly said the 850 was the only hold up, rather than the 3080. If it's something else I will feel a bit fleeced. Fingers crossed. Is there any issue with the new 980 Samung drives, I got a couple of them in my build?

My build will arrive monday!! It would appear things are really moving now! Hold in there peeps!! The wait will be worth it! But....I will be posting pics of the sweet RGB'ness that is my build lol...not to make anyone feel bad like ;)
