Ryzen 7 5800X - 6700XT Poor Time Spy Score

Hi guys. I received my PC last week. Today I've finally had a chance to set it up only to see it struggle with FPS. Witcher 3 and BF5 were struggling to maintain 25-30 FPS on the lowest settings possible. I'm currently using a Samsung G5 monitor (1440p) The ''Time Spy'' score is concerning when compared to the average. I've removed the AMD drivers in safe mode and reinstalled them and I've checked for updates via ''Windows update''. Neither has worked. :(

Well there is something obvious wrong because your average clock frequency is running at 487mhz. When I did a timespy test for my 6700xt average clock frequency was 2388 MHz.

Now given that the minimum frequency of the card is 500mhz, I'm not sure if being at 487mhz would be classed as running at minimum speed, or less than minimum speed. So I would try the following for testing purposes, and keep a close eye on your gpu temp.

Now it may just be an issue where the software defaults the max frequency to that of the minimum frequency (I've seen that reported previously on other forum) or it may be an issue with the card, thus we need to test to see if its just a software default issue or if there is something wrong with the actual card

If you open the AMD Radeon Software

Click on (1) "Performance", then (2) "Tuning"

Enable (3) "GPU Tuning" and (4) "Advanced Control"

Then check to see what the (5) "Max Frequency" is set to

and see if you can increase the same moving the (6) slider.

I'd try and set the max to around 2000 for initial testing, and then if after a few hours there are no issues then try it at around 2500 and test again. Obviously if everything runs stable, no issues with GPU temp then we can put it down to default software configuration.

If the gpu temp gets high enough to throttle the card or the Radeon software reduces the setting for maximum frequency, then that would suggest there may be a hardware issue, but we can deal with that if and when such an issue occurs.

PS: What make is the card. I have seen instances where Gigabyte and ASRock versions of the 6700xt have required a bios update, so just wondering if that is the issue. If the above doesn't work, then the card may need a BIOS update, but don't do anything regarding that until we have ruled out the software issue first, and also allowed some of our more experienced posters to consider the issue

Hi COLEYT. Thank you for helping! The card is, Gigabyte Radeon™ RX 6700 XT EAGLE 12G. Here's a before and after picture of the tuning settings.

Here's the default.

before.jpg

And I've changed it to this.

after.jpg

I'll try some games and I'll run the Time Spy again. I'll use the AMD overlay for keeping check of FPS and temp.

After setting the max frequency to 2000 I ran both Games again on max settings. ( Witcher 3 and Battlefield 5 ) During gameplay the FPS remained at a steady 60 fps. The GPU ran temp between 53 and 65, the junction temp never hit over 69.

I've run Time Spy again and the results are much better. Temps remained under 70.

Improved Results

I'll now increase the GPU frequency to 2500 and test again.

I've also been monitoring the fan tuning. When the PC is idle the fan isn't kicking in until the temp hits the high 50's. A quick look at the advanced settings for fan tuning confirms this. Is this a setting I will need to change or shall I leave it as it is?

On my settings I don't have the zeroRPM setting set. Thus my fan is running at around 600rpm when the gpu is idle and the temp is around 26c. If I enable zerorpm, then obviously my fans don't run until the temp gets to 50%. Idle temp with zerorpm is approx 32c. Given that I am unable to notice any difference in noise levels I'm happy to to keep zerorpm disabled.

However there is no harm in leaving the settings as they are.

Glad that your system is now running more like you expected, and that it was just a simple software configuration issue and not an actual hardware fault

Your gpu is still under achieving. Download DDU and do a complete driver uninstall and then reinstall them from AMD’s website

So I tried starting a game using 2500 MHz. This causes the game to crash and the Radeon defaults back to Automatic tuning ( 500Mhz ).

The windows notification message tells me '' Default Radeon WattMan settings have been restored due to an unexpected system failure''

I can raise the Max Frequency up to 2424 MHz before the game crashes and the restoration takes place. at 2424 MHz I'm still at 60fps at max settings.

Time Spy Crashes when running at 2400 MHz. It gives the same WattMan error. I'll try the DDU again.

According to the gigabyte site the max clock speed for your card is 2424mhz, so that probably explains the issue when clock speed was set to 2500, so a driver reinstall is now probably a wise decision.

The results from the last timely test you ran was fine by the way. The results would be lower than people expect because we were deliberately running the test with the clock speed set at 80% of the max setting. If it remains unstable when you next test, try setting the max clock frequency at 2350

@ColEyt

I DDU'd and ran Time Spy at 2400 MHz. This caused a crash just before the CPU test. Thanks to your update I lowered the MHz to 2387 and Time Spy finished the test.

I think we might be getting there now. :)

So that score is the same that I got. Whilst I only have a 5600x, my gpu is able to run at 2500mhz, so I'm guessing the advantage in your processor is cancelled by my clock speed advantage in the gpu.

What bios version does your card have ?

I know there was a new bios issued by gigabyte for that card on the 25 march that addresses some instability issues, however I wouldn't recommend upgrading until someone with more experience concerning gpu cards, bios upgrades and PCS warranties is able to comment, as we are now approaching my limit of knowledge.

Hopefully someone will be able to continue the assistance so that we can get your card running at its maximum clock speed

I wouldn't upgrade any PC BIOS or VBIOS without talking to PCS first as it would void any warranty.

But if it were mine, I'd want all components on the latest BIOS / VBIOS, plus the new VBIOS include the new resizable bar technology boost which is worth playing with.

Thanks Spyder, in my head I knew that was the route to take, but didn't want to mislead the OP.

I would think the OP already has access to the resizable bar technology as he is using an AMD card, although agree with what you saying about wanting to be running latest bios

Yes. I'm disappointed they shipped it with an old bios with instability issues. If they don't allow me to update would it be better to return the PC?

They do allow you to update the BIOS, just only when they’ve authorised it, it’s not something you need to send the PC back for, it’s a 2 minute job

The only reason I would imagine that PCS refuse the bios upgrade is if they are aware of issues with that bios, thus by asking them before hand , they will say yes that is fine go ahead, or else tell you that they are awaiting a new bios fix. The main issue is that you preserve your warranty.

However, the version of your bios 020.002.000.019.000000 is the latest version released in March this year, according to TechPowerUp

https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/231596/gigabyte-rx6700xt-12288-210303, however the gigabyte site says a new bios (f2) was released on the 25/3/2021, so I'm a bit confused

But the next port of call is to contact PCS, as Spyder recommended and see where we go from there

That's confusing. I've emailed support to check so I'm sure they'll point me in the right direction. I'm just happy my GPU is performing well now. Thank you ever so much for your help @ColEyt @SpyderTracks
