Sanity check please

Not locked in yet, I want to be able to play AC, TW3 etc at 4k 60fps at top settings and not too struggle too much. This was the only MB it would let me select, how does it compare against my curent ASUS® Z97-PRO GAMER: ATX, USB3.0, SATA 6GB/S.

The cpu+mobo combination you chose is not really aimed at gaming. The below would be a better option although I believe the cpu is overkill if your only use is gaming. You could drop to the 3700x with no impact in gaming. Don't buy so many SATA SSDs. Stick to 1 m2 drive of 1-2tb for windows and games and a 4tb hdd for your music/movies library. The case you choose has already got rgb fans so no need to purchase the extra kit. I forgot to add the fast track but even with that it should come under your initial build.

Why not 3800x? Isn't it supposed to be better binned cpu. The way I've seen it explained is, for pure gaming it's between 3600x and 3800x,that's it. Most reviewers got 3700x and 3900x, so there is a lot of data on them, but i feel like those 2 (3600x and 3800x) are going under the radar a little bit

That's not what I had seen. The 3800x is only a tiny bit faster than the 3700x. Same with 3600 / 3600x. And before that the 2600 / 2600x. You spend a disproportionate amount for a tiny bit of performance.

And also remember that this is a PC Specialist-specific context. Reviews talk about MSRP. Or shelf prices.

If an R5 3600x is ~£15 more than an R5 3600, sure, why not. PCS were selling them for £50 different the other day.. seems to have shrunk to a little over £40. Still doesn't necessarily sound worth it.

The R7 3800x seems to be £118 more than the R7 3700x ?!? !

It's only another £95 for the R9. Why would anyone buy a 3800x at that kind of price.

Well look, I'm not eloquent or have the knowledge to make my own argument, so I'm just gonna copy-paste a comment from reddit thread that made a lot of sense to me, Here it goes:

Essentially, the 3700X is the successor to the 2700, not the 2700X.

Let's look at last generation. The 2700 (non-X) fit 2 more cores and 4 more threads into the same power envelope as the 2600. Base and boost clocks were in the same ballpark:

• 3.4/3.9 for the 2600
• 3.2/4.1 for the 2700

Again, the 3700X appears to be more of a successor to the 2700. As such, I expect the top gaming processors from this product stack to be the 3600, 3600X, and 3800X. Meanwhile, the 3700X and 3900X will offer obscene value in the budget-HEDT space. But I wouldn't get those last two if your primary use is gaming.

Take the second chart from that TPU link, add 200-300mhz to each data point, and swap out:

• 2600 = 3600
• 2700 = 3700X
• 2700X = 3800X

And you have a good ballpark with regards to where the core/frequency scaling will be on these chips. Add in the ~15% IPC, and you have two gaming monsters (3600 for value, 3800X for performance), and a budget-HEDT marvel (3700X).

I googled. That was posted weeks before the reviews even came out :/

It's speculation. Which is fun, and very good in terms of thinking about things to look for in exciting news releases, but tbh anything prior to the reviews should largely be disregarded.

This person makes the point about the 2700 seeing frequencies drop quite a bit under multithreaded loads:

And essentially they suspect it'll happen to the 3700x because it's got the same TDP as the 3600 i.e. 65W.

Beyond the ~150Mhz you see drop down under multithreaded loads which is what you more usually expect from Ryzen (you'd of course expect something of the kind to happen with Intel CPUs too; that what boost are)

Taking the 3600x, we see at best around a 3% improvement in performance with an R6 3600x (95W TDP) over the 3600 (65W TDP) for a ~25% increase in price - at the prices reviewed - and very limited OC potential:

Am I missing something? I cant find a single online review of the Ryzen 3800x. 3700x and 3900x, but not 3800x?

That doesn't make any sense to me, as across the board so far Zen 2 has had very little headroom for OCing. AMD are pushing the architecture almost as far as it will go out of the box. I think people just love to use the word binned, and have something to look forward to. We'll see once decent / any benchmarks start to appear of course.

But the 3800x is guilty of bring a ripoff until proven innocent tbh

And it's official:

3800x doesn't give a meaningful enough performance lift to be a good purchase, and isn't binned for higher OC since the CPUs end up OCing to a similar level
Also that recommendation was with a $70 price difference, not the £105(!) price difference here
