Sense-check of power supply requirement

Morning all.

I ordered a new gaming rig yesterday with the aim of mainly running MSFS 2020 on Ultra settings.

Nvidia recommended a minimum of a 750w power supply for the RTX 3080 although I’d read that running MSFS at high settings could potentially tip the power requirement over that. I went ahead and ordered an 850w PSU. The specs are below. PCS are saying that the max power drawer is 562w. Have I overdone it?

Na, 850w is a good shout. Might be a little more than you need at the moment but it's a safe bet and will be ready to accept further GPUs in future (y)

Having the 850W and a decent PSU which the RMx's are is not a bad thing, it leaves you with headroom and 850W is a healthy size to fit any kind of future upgrade too.

The build is a little worrying though.

Thanks. Worrying in what sense?

The choice of Intel might be one you come to regret, and I would be concerned over the choice of cooler.
Intel are going to have more issues with heat, I would be looking at the best cooler I could get my hands on.

Im thinking the plan is the 256GB SSD is for the operating system? M.2 for MSFS?

Thanks Sibun. I take it you’d recommend something like a Corsair H80i? Yes you are correct that the plan is/was the 256GB for the OS and the M.2 for MSFS. PCS advised against putting the OS on the SSD though so I selected to have it on the M.2. Unless you recommend I change it? I’m still able to modify the order if needs be

no, i wouldnt touch anything under the h100i plat, its one of the best on the market. The coolermaster ones are ok, but thats about it.
You want that chips to have the best heat dissipation you can get on it, intel have issues with heat, amongst other things, last thing you want is it throttling itself too.

Regarding storage, It wouldnt really be helping you having the OS separate like that unless the OS is on the faster one.
I would suggest dropping the SSD and haveing the M.2 as OS including the game, if thats your main use here.

There have been a few threads recently about MSFS build, I would really recommend checking them out.
If I were in your shoes, I would cancel the build and go with AMD.

What monitor are you pairing with the 3080 GPU?

Yeah that’s the main aim really. My original thinking was that my current C: drive ends up getting clogged up with stuff (poor management on my part I know) so by having a drive for my OS, the M.2 for MSFS and the a HDD for other files it would keep things tidy.
