An old chef friend of mine revealed the twist in Shutter Island for me about an hour before I was due to go and see it at the cinema. I towel flicked him in the crotch so ferociously that he had to go and see his doctor.

Damn I love that film! Up there with Matrix, Vanilla Skies, all those ones where they twist reality and it makes you rewatch it and the whole film takes on a totally different meaning. So so clever.

Pointless fact, if you liked Vanilla Skies, it was actually redone off the original spanish film, Abre Los Ojos which means "open your eyes" (the words being spoken as the hollywood version starts) and starred Penelope Cruz. The director was so enamoured with her performance in the original that he wouldn't do the hollywood version unless she agreed to be in it.

If you like that kinda movie mate you need to check out Coherence if you haven't seen it, it's always my go to recommendation for trippy thought provoking movie that's also fun

Donnie Darko is incredible too

This was confirmed ages ago, AMD got the exclusive on VRR and AI generation.

But I'm sure that will change in the longer term, they'll likely have signed a timed deal.

I’ve got a 4090, so I don’t (hopefully, pretty please) need no stinking DLSS or Frame Generation

:mad::unsure:
DLSS will certainly be a bonus once/if it's added in.

Looking at the Xbox Series X specs, your 4090 should be good to go:

Between actual leaks and trolls making up leaks, avoiding spoilers online is becoming a little more difficult. Still, I did my preload this morning ready for Friday, so nearly there.

Following a few Youtubers who do their best to be non-spoilery who have got review codes, it seems this might be one of the least buggy Bethesda games ever. Not sure Starfield will necessarily be an all-time great, but it's looking pretty decent so far!

The internal hamster wheel has been running today. Above are the specs that the Xbox Series X has. They're more or less where the PC's recommended specs are:

So the performance on PC with the recommended specs is likely to be somewhere around 4k 30 FPS same as you'd get from the console release. My 5800X, 32 GB RAM and RTX 3080 might be heading towards 4k 50/60 FPS depending on how things scale from there, but no guarantee it'd be in anyway stable. Might be worth sticking to 4k 30 if that's what the developers are recommending as their preferred experience for the game.

🤔

Review embargo day today (although seemingly no media outlets/Youtubers/etc in the UK actually got copies, so the reviews will drop during the US working day timezones, so this evening-ish.

I'll soon know if me taking next week off was a good idea or a silly one!

Then again, I've been feeling a bit burnt out with work, so needed the time off anyway!

this is pretty cool

i think with so much hype surrounding the game the devs would need to make sure its at least a serviceable game at launch, i expect bugs but too many like cyberpunk and fans would not take kindly.

I'd settle for a Skyrim-type level of bugs on launch to be honest. I pre-ordered then too, but bought a physical copy for the Xbox 360 and it arrived 3 or 4 days early, so I got to play around with it even before the Day 1 patch launched. It crashed a couple of times when I did things the game didn't expect, but was otherwise fairly solid performance-wise. If Bethesda have got it into that kind of shape for tomorrow, then colour me happy!

Well, that's Starfield pre-installed...only took 17 minutes (about 100MB/s average).

Wonder if I'll be too ill to work in the morning - or maybe have 'internet problems'

So it begins.

This guy I've thought of as decent for non-spoilery reviews. Literally the first 10/15 seconds of the video is a TLDR and is a promising summary:

And from a wider perspective:

I'll take that, and is in line with my thoughts of where I expected the game to be putting aside the hype.
