Storage advice...

Hey there again.

I have a build in the works, you can find that thread here https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/threads/getting-geared-up.69281/

I'm looking at my storage setup... a 2Tb barracuda HDD for storage and the 500gb Samsung m.2 for system and such.

My question is would I install my games on the M.2 or the HDD. Obviously that 500gb wont last long after a few games go on. Should I think about a 2nd M.2 or SSD for application installs/games etc? I'm debating dropping the cpu from a 3600X to just the 3600, il save around £70 so thought I could add another drive if it made sence.

It does look like most builds that come through here just go with the same options I have or similar and i know its load times that are affected between the different drives in general and so maybe the difference for a gamer is negligible?!?

It really depends on the game IMO my rule of the thumb is.

larger open world games without loading screens and big maps, put on the SSD.

Games with loading screens, (strategy, 4x, indie) put on the HDD

How much space does the operating system take up generally.. I'd probably want to install Cod on the m.2 as it's my game of choice atm

*edit: a quick google search found my answer.. about 15gb.. it also seems that some answers are on another active thread

That’s backwards though isn’t it? A game on SSD won’t affect game performance, only load times. So it should be the other way.

You’ll need about 50 Gb for windows once you factor in updates and programs.

My thinking is that games without loading screens would be doing the loading in the background without the user noticing. I would assume a slow read speed would result in textures popping into hi-resolution because the texture scaling was hampered etc if you decided to travel across the map faster than the game could load the new area.

Does t work like that, I’ve played open world games or any games long before SSD’s came along and there were never performance issues related to drive speed.
