TDR crash when I load a game

I have a PC specialist custom gaming laptop. Was made in Nov 2016 and shortly after the warranty expired it started to crash to an orange screen when loading a game. TDR failure. Games like Frostpunk and Civ 6 would often load the opening screens and allow you to start a new game and select options but then as it loaded the game or just after it had loaded crash to orange screen with TDR failure. I cannot work out why this is happening and its now completely useless for games. It works in all other regards. I have tested the GPU using benchmark programmes and if shows it as working. I have tried lots of stuff, flashed bios, all drivers, changed out hard drives still can't find what the issue is.

Additionally its now decided that there is no volume control. Sound is either on or off, thats it.

Can anyone suggest anything please? I really want to get this system repaired to sell on as I want to get a new desktop.

First thing to try is a clean windows installation from scratch following the method 1 in this article:

You can get an up to date windows image from here:

Then run windows updates until it has installed everything available.

DON'T INSTALL ANY ADDITIONAL DRIVERS OR SOFTWARE.

Then post back when you're ready.

try uninstalling the graphic drivers using DDU the install the latest drivers from the Nvidia website, making sure you get the notebook one for your card

Please, that's not a clean installation.

To troubleshoot effectively, you have to start from a clean platform to rule out software as an issue.

You need to follow the above method for a clean install which is completely different to the reset that you're currently performing. A reset is not sufficient in this instance and will leave any software issues on the platform.

If I do that will I need to back up the personal files on the laptop to an external disk?
You're only going to be formatting the primary SSD, all your data should be on the HDD? The HDD won't be touched unless you wipe it yourself, but there's no need to, you only need to wipe the OS drive.

Hi again.

I’ve done a clean install and formatted the HD as well just so it was cleaned out. Put Steam back on and same problems. I ran a memory test and all RAM working fine. Ran benchmarking and I’m getting back CPU throttled at 99% by windows. Checked power management settings and all to 100%, nothing is clearing it. I’ve read in a couple of places that it was windows update and others have had same issues.
Do you know the best way to fix this? I really hope it’s this as can’t find anything else wrong with it. Ideally want to get it working smoothly so I can sell it and buy a new desktop.

So I’ve done the clean windows install, obviously jumped ahead testing one game to see if any difference. Put steam on the D: I can get rid of it and clean install again if needed.
