Test for USB(2.0) slot status?

Hello all,

For the first time ever two of my USB data back-up devices are not recognised by my PC. And they work fine in my Samsung Netbook.

Q. How to diagnose what's wrong with my pc USB slots?

Info that may help:
  • Six USB slots. Four USB2.0, two are USB3.0.
  • One USB2.0 has always had my headphones plugged in from day one and the headphones still work fine.
  • Tried data devices in that headphone slot. No joy.
  • Vacummed slots. No joy.
  • My thoughts are a Windows update?? But it's Monday and the standard weekly update rolls out on Tuesday night.


Not been on this forum since the winter of 2011 because I have not had a problem to ask about until now. Credit to pcspecialist for selling kit that works? :tank:

I wouldn't know how to do that.

I have been doing some internet research and got as far as finding the thirteen controllers you mentioned listed under the Windows7 Control Panel > Device Manager.

More info:
My Canon camera isn't recognised by that usb slot either now.
So I plugged the camera into the usb slot next to it as an extra test (the slot that had my headphones mentioned above) and it tried to install drivers for the camera but failed. Okay, so back a step. I plugged the headphones back in to where they were,...and they still work fine. Odd.

What are your system specs? And can you post screenshot of your expanded Device Manager.

Which spec info would help us? Windows7 Home Premium with Service pack1 (64bit).

The ASMedia XHCI will be your USB 3.0 ports, the Intel 6 Series Chipset will control your USB 2.0. Can you list the driver numbers?

Driver numbers?
To step through this, I guess any advice will need to mention where on the Device Manager this can be found. Title to click on, which tab etc.

Thank you for spending time thinking/typing about this by the way. It's an education for me.

Okay, used your suggestion. Only 'wired networking' has a new driver available.

Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility (Chipset INF) < says 'this version is valid'.

Thoughts?

Probably best go to Yamaha's suggestion of unsinstalling the controller and reinstalling it.

You'll need the motherboard utility disc that came with the PC first and foremost, do you have that handy? If not you'll need to gather the required drivers from the net before you do this. It may be worth making a Restore Point too.

Ooo, your link looks good. But I like your advice about being prepared. I might not get around to this tonight. Task seems to be growing.

Hmmm, I will have to find the motherboard utility disc but I do keep all such things. Hopefully it says something sensible on it like Intel Utility Disc.

I wouldn't know how/which drivers to gather from the net. I am guessing you mean the names of the two Intel Series C200 (since they'll disappear if I right click and uninstall them yeah?).

I will look into the Restore Point. I haven't needed to do this on this PC (can't remember why) but used them regularly on my old DELL previously.

To create a Restore Point:

Right click Computer > System Protection > Create (this should just create a Restore Point for your C: drive, the other drives/partitions shouldn't have System Protection turned on by default).

We'll find the drivers if/when you need them.

Your motherboard disc should have the make of your motherboard on it (ASUS in this case).

The task may look like it's growing but it's pretty straight forward and doesn't take long.

Would I need to uninstall all thirteen drivers from the start or just the two suspect Intel controllers you mentioned? Hopefully my last question. :)

To disable and re-enable the USB controllers, follow these steps:

Click Start, and then click Run.

Note If you are running Windows Vista, click Start, and then use the Start Search box.
1 Type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK. Device Manager opens.
2 Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.

3 Note You might have to scroll down the list to find this item.
4 Right-click the first USB controller under Universal Serial Bus controllers, and then click Uninstall to remove it.
5 Repeat step 4 for each USB controller that is listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
6 Restart the computer. After the computer starts, Windows will automatically scan for hardware changes and reinstall all the USB controllers that you uninstalled.
Check the USB device to see whether it is working.
