Thinking of a Defiance

Quite interested in a little upgrade. Currently got a 3070 Asus laptop, starting to show it's age after 4 years though still works. Is the 4070 going to be much better? Also like having Ryzen. Have a relative that'd take it off my hands if I did go for another Clevo so it wouldn't go to waste at least.

Planning on transferring my SSDs to this if I bought as well (1tb Samsung EVO, 2tb Samsung EVO) hence the lack of storage (Wish there was an option to omit an SSD all together)

Just to confirm, do you know the resolution of your current Asus laptop? Just to be sure.

This one is 1440p (I'm sure your Asus would be too). The 4070 is the lowest you want to go for that resolution, but what you've selected is A LOT of laptop for the price, you're getting a fantastic deal. On any laptop, the GPU is far more important than the CPU anyway as that's always going to be the first bottleneck.

BUT, that being said, gen to gen for GPU I don't think is a worthwhile upgrade even on a laptop, I'd leave it until next years laptops are announced at CES in January with the new gen 5000 series GPU's if they're out by then, if not then AMD should have some out.

1080p, 300hz.

Yeah I might wait for a potential 5xxx series. Would also like to see what AMD might offer as well. Tbh I was a bit blindsided by that price. Amazing value.

The 4070 is around 10% faster than the 3070ti 140W @1440p.
On my Ionico, I can play almost everything, but on some heavy titles, I have to decrease significantly the details to maintain a decent frame rate. I agree with @SpyderTracks that a 4070 is the bare minimum for decent laptop gaming performance.

What you have to take into account is that you're stepping up resolution to 1440p which is 2.25 x the pixels than 1080p, obviously that takes a lot more GPU grunt.

4070 at 1440p is the bare minimum, whereas a 3070 at 1080p is overpowered really.

So a 4070 at 1440p is not going to be as fast as a 3070 at 1080p, you'd probably average around 60fps in newer games up to around 120fps on older games at 1440p.

I would definitely hold off until the next gen are announced, I don't think you'd be impressed with the 4070 at 1440p
