Thinking of pulling the trigger on this..

So I'm at that stage now where I think I've got all the bits I want selected, but just going over the list again and again waiting to click that Proceed button. Always the part where I start getting nervous thinking should I change this or this, ya know? How am I looking?

This is around my £1500ish budget, for 1440p / 144hz gaming.

Should I add any extra case fans? First time going for a more open case so would like the airflow to be as good as possible to keep that noise down. Got a RTX 3070, Windows and networking already sorted.

Looks pretty damn good. I’d probably just up the cooler to the H115i Elite, the smaller M.2 to the 980 and drop the thermal paste.

32GB of RAM might be a bit overkill for a gaming system, although sim games will make use of it and it’ll cover you for streaming / content creation 👍

Good spot, changed to the H115i Elite and the M.2 to the 980 Dropped the thermal paste too.

Yeah I think 32GB is a bit overkill right now, but it'll give me that extra bit of headroom should I need it in future.

What about the CPU though, I'm seeing comments around that the 5900X is just way overkill for gaming too, whereas a 5600X is the sweet spot. I'm not restricted by budget too much so I don't mind and my thought was that it would stay competitive performance wise for longer than a lower end one.

The 5900X is the ‘have it all’ solution. The new consoles now have eight cores so I wouldn’t go less than the 5800X if I was buying a new system for myself. And games like Warzone will make use of all cores you’ve got available. You’re effectively staying ahead of the pack for the time being, until the next wonderchip is released. The 5800X is also a bit of a thermal monster, running surprisingly warmer than its big brother. I think you’ve nailed it, personally 👍

Also wondering what the stock situation like is right now @ PCS. I managed to luckily source a GPU but are we in the same place for the 5900X? Was hoping to get it ordered an not have to wait 3 months for it

Thanks, that's reassuring!

CPU's don't seem to have the same drought mate so the wait time shouldn't be as long

The 5900x is the premium option for having more than you need, the 5800x is THE gaming processor in my opinion but the 5900x is if you just want a little more

Nice one, thanks for your responses guys. I'm gonna go walk the dog, have a cuppa and then might just hit that order button! Excited and nervous at the same time.

Oh, forgot to ask about the RAM. 4x8GB or 2x16GB? Does it matter with this config?

Makes no difference for performance (because the 8GB sticks are single-rank and the 16GB sticks are dual-rank). If you were going for RGB RAM, four sticks are prettier, but that doesn't seem like it will be necessary!

2 x 16GB gives you the option to go to 64GB which would be really dumb in a gaming build but hey it's an option

Yeah didn't think it'd make much if any impact for performance. I guess I'll just go with the cheaper option although I imagine it's not a big difference there either.

Well, I walked the dog, had a cuppa and let the order sit for a bit...but I've finally gone and done it. Thanks for all your replies everyone. Now the waiting begins :D

Anyone who has ordered without a GPU and fitted one upon arrival? Wondering if PCS would route power cables ready for me - I've sent a message in hopes they will during the build, would be handy and save me a tiny bit of hassle.

They’re pretty good about that and have done it for others, you should get your request fulfilled 👍
