What's it going to be used for and what monitor do you have
Probably the most intensive stuff will be some gaming, but only stuff I can't get on my PlayStation, so Crusader Kings 3, Forza Horizon 4 are probably the most demanding games. My monitor is right now just a TV, but I am going to try and get another monitor for Christmas, so am open to different options, if anything needs to be taken into account.

Probaby not what you want to hear but id save up & spend a touch extra. An extra £70 or so will get you a much better machine

256gb isn't going to last long especially if you're gaming. The general consensus on radeon GPU's is to avoid due to driver issues. A 1660s will do a better job for 1080p gaming. The network card is definitely worth the upgrade and its also worth adding the upgraded warranty for an extra fiver.

I'm no expert just an observation based on my own build and research.

I wouldn't recommend any Intel build at this time at all, they're just really poor compared to AMD, literally years behind, especially at this level.

Prices have risen due to covid, whereas previously we could recommend a build at £700, now it's more £900. When we configure a budget build, it's with 7 - 10 years on the platform lifetime, anything below that just isn't worth it, you're actually paying a lot more because you won't be able to upgrade it at all.

So what do you reckon would be a good alternative? A Ryzen 5 3600? Or, with Covid ongoing, am I better off just getting something very, very budget and then revisiting higher specifications 1 year, year and a half down the line?

You're probably best off saving for a solid base build with a good case, CPU, PSU and storage. That way, a GPU upgrade every now and then means a system can easily last you 7 to 10 years (y)

So with that in mind, would something like a decent Ryzen be a good start instead of the GPU? I could 'downgrade' the 5500 for a GTX1650 for the time being and get a B550 and maybe a 3600 or something like that?
