Cost: About £1,350 which is around my budget.

Any thoughts on this build please? It's primarily for gaming, being mainly MMORPGs such as Elder Scrolls Online. I've included a DVD drive as I do occasionally play CDs (and this influenced the choice of case along with my dislike of distracting lighting) and a memory card reader for my camera. I was prompted that a 450W power supply would be adequate but I like to build in some inflation-proofing to cover future upgrades. I want a Geforce card but don't use Geforce Experience.

Thanks in advance!

I would honestly bump that power supply again, I wouldn't go less than 650W just as a rule of thumb to give you room to upgrade later down the line.

I'd also go with 2 x 8GB Sticks of RAM, it should cost the same but It'll give you two free slots to put another 16GB of ram in later as well for a good and cheap upgrade

An AMD build is the way to go at the moment, Intel are trailing behind.

What monitor are you using? We match appropriate GPUs to the monitor at hand.

Thanks both.

The monitor is a BenQ G2420HDBL 24" Widescreen LED, I have a similar but slightly newer model on my other computer. Standard resolution is 1920x1080.

What would be the comparable level AMD processor please, I know nothing about them these days, and would that affect the choice of Nvidia for the graphics card or the motherboard?

The 750D case is a little pricey but is the cheapest case that I would suggest that also can fit a DVD drive.
Got you the latest gen 6 core Ryzen CPU, this is a great value gaming chip that will handle your needs.
Got the AMD motherboard to match it.
Right now your monitor will be bottlenecking your performance. The BenQ model you mentioned is 10 years old and monitors have come a very long way since 2010. This Nvidia GPU will let you smash out MMORPGS at max settings without a trouble, and will also support you upgrading to a 1080p 144hz monitor.
Buffed your boot drive; 256GB fills up very quickly.
Given you an RMx PSU. This is a fully modular design that runs quieter and should last longer. It also gives room to upgrade down the line.
For gaming purposes the stock cooler is more than ample with the 5600x.
AX200 wireless card for £11 is a steal, all you need plus BT support.

Thanks MrWilson, much appreciated.

I should have clarified my internet connection. I don't make any use of wifi at all, but consider it sensible to cover that option in any new build. I use the VM Superhub 3 which I assume will plug direct or through a separate router into the lan port.

The processor is on pre-order only, in your experience would that add significantly to the build time?

Thanks for the revised build.

Understand your point about the wifi card. You can opt to remove it completely, but for £19 I would recommend keeping it in, it should last you for 7-10 years.
Covid has caused a lot of supply chain issues worldwide, and demand is overtaking supply for certain components. The 5600x is in short supply, but nowhere near as scarce as other products like Nvidia's latest top-end GPU, the RTX 3080. We can't say for certain how long the 5600x might delay your build (if I did I would be buying lottery tickets instead) but would say an increased wait of maybe a couple of weeks is worth the performance increase of the CPU over other models. Obviously, it's your purchase, so if you wanted to go for the 3600x to have an in-stock CPU, you would handle 1080p gaming without any trouble.

Thanks, that sort of delay wouldn't worry me so I'll likely go for the higher performing CPU.

On the basis of that build, are you happy with no extra case fans?

I do appreciate your assistance, hopefully we've covered all bases now so I won't have to trouble you again!

Again, I don't know specifically how much additional time could be caused by shortage of 5600x, and I am very keen that I don't mislead you. I used the figure of 2 weeks because that's what I've seen on the forums so far; I really hope that stock keeps coming in and you don't have a long wait ahead of you, but I am afraid I can't tell you for certain.

For an additional £9, adding the 2x120mm black case fans can give you some piece of mind.

Wish you the best of luck if you decide to go through with this purchase! :)

I've now decided against including a DvD drive as for only occasional use playing CDs I'll get a simple external one and be able to connect it to either of my machines (present and future) via the USB sockets.

On that basis, and based otherwise on @MrWilson 's revised build, what would be the most suitable case please, preferably without distracting lighting?

So the Fractal Focus G as suggested above is a really solid all round case, DVD drive notwithstanding. It'll handle all your needs and doesn't have a load of RGB fans etc.

Thanks. I assume getting one sent from Amazon to PCS direct is a standard procedure, I was also considering in terms of in-stock cases the Corsair 4000D perhaps with a top fan added.
