Trying to make a budget video editing computer

Hi all, I need to make a video editing computer for around £600 but I don't really know what I'm doing, I know GPU's are important for video editing but I don't know to what degree I should prioritise them over other elements. I won't be using this computer for video gaming, just video editing and browsing the net and such.

I have this one set up -

i5 12400f
32GB RAM
Integrated Graphics Accelerator
1TB Storage
DVD Drive

The other one would be this -

i5 12400f
16GB RAM
1GB NVidia Geforce
512GB Storage
DVD Drive

Any help or alternative suggestions would be much appreciated. I can't afford to go over £600 (my original budget was actually £500 but it seemed impossible)

You wouldn't be able to get a custom computer at that price that's worth anything.

I'd suggest looking at second hand at that budget.

Computers are pretty much the only thing I would never buy second hand.

So the set-up I have here is just a lemon? :(

The computer I've been using for my video editing for the last 5 years is an i3-2120 3.30 GHz with 6GB RAM, unfortunately its crashing all the time these days and I have to keep restarting it, it takes ages to boot up. I don't think it has long for this world but its done me well.

For a custom rig, you won’t be able to get anything worthwhile.

For a system without a GPU you’d be looking at about £800.

With an entry level gpu you’d be looking at around £1350.

Sorry but I'm not sure what you mean, did I make a mistake in the site's computer build section? I really don't know what I'm doing :)

Both the options I put above cost £600 inc VAT, one has a GPU and the other doesn't?

This would be the lowest I could recommend, you'd have the ability to add up to a mid range GPU down the line when you had more funds.

You'd also need some other drives, perhaps you have some you could carry over from your current build. But best practice for video editing is a primary M2 SSD for OS, secondary SATA SSD for cache and HDD for storage

You can't just put any components together, that's not how a system works, they have to be balanced for the specific use case. You can throw anything together, but they're the kinds of systems that overheat, have stability issues, and have to be completely replaced rather than just upgrading a few parts after only a couple of years.

This is the lowest I could recommend.

Ah, I see, so I was going to make something useless, thanks for the advice its a life saver, I can't deal with wasting £600!

I'll probably just get a prebuilt PC from Curry's in my price range, it can't be worse than the computer I'm using at the moment.

Thank you for the help.

And also, the graphics card in the second build you posted isn't a GPU, it's a basic display adapter just for simply outputting an image. It's designed for older systems that have a CPU that doesn't have on board graphics (most modern ones do that are more powerful than that card). It has no hardware acceleration capabilities that a proper graphics card would have.

Ah I see what I did wrong, I thought it would automatically tell me when an option I picked wasn't right, but you have to hit "proceed" before it actually looks at what you've done.

So the CPU I picked has no integrated graphics accelerator, so I would need the 1GB NVidia just to get it working? Except you're saying that's basically useless anyway, so I guess it would have to be the i5-12400? That seems to have integrated graphics acceleration.

Then add a Deepcool AK400 to help to stop it from overheating?

To pay for those I have to drop the Storage space down to 512GB

Is saving up a bit more an option, or do you need it now? I’ve had 2 PCS systems, first lasted 10 years, second running strong on year 4. Budget builds are less likely to last. So a couple of hundred extra now could save in the long run. But appreciate you may well just not have that money.

What video editing software are you planning on using?

I can't really even afford £600 tbh, going to have to cut back on spending in other areas for the next month

I'm now thinking it may be best for me to get a fairly weak computer that will be reliable. The thing is, I've been using a computer I bought in 2009 anyway, when I make a 2 hour 1080p video it takes literally like ~10 hours for the computer to finalise the video :D

So anything is likely to be a massive improvement that helps a lot.
