Ah a bleep! Im a tanky myself... with no tank.

I think im leaning more to the 2600 side now, but il sleep on it and do a little reading up on it tomorrow.

liking the look of the spec Trackeri posted tho :)

Anyway thanks again for the help!

I'm going to have to contest I'm afraid dear friend :p

i7 990x - Hex Core
10610 total points
1768.3333 points per core

i7 2600k - Quad Core
9585 total points
2396.25 points per core

So Linear, dear friend, which is actually the higher performing ;) haha

Technically... the 990x is still higher performing xD but the 2600k does better per core... and is cheaper...

BUT ITS A 990X FOR GODS SAKE :D

be wary of CPU benchmarking suites, as they don't necessarily translate into real world performance, the 990x will blow the 2600k on wprime multi threaded, but what about other things?

in the July 2011 issue of Custom PC, they actually compare the two processors! with a breakdown as follows:
(note, the 990x is run with triple channel memory which is its preferred, whereas sandy bridge is dual channel)

2600k was oc'd to 5.3 ghz (PCS will go to 4.8)
990X was oc'd to 5.05 ghz (PCS will go to 4.4)

990x is better at:
Video Encoding ( by 10% margin) more cores is better, no suprise the 6 core wins
Cine bench (3d image rendering suite) 4% margin
Wprime32 multi threaded (3.5 seconds against 2600's 5)
3d mark11 (15,711 points versus 2600's 15,466)

2600 was better at:
Image editing (2,411 points to 990's 2,185)
Overall Media benchmarks (Averaging 1% increase against 990X)
Wprime single thread (5% margin)
Super Pi (4% margin)
Multi-tasking (4% margin)
Peak power consumption (750w 990X versus 2600's 531w)
and most importantly, Arma II Game performance (which is very cpu hungry), 990x 92fps min, versus 2600k's 99fps min).

there isn't a world of difference, but the 990x is geared towards encoding and anything that runs multi thread, and gaming performance the 2600k slightly edges ahead ( in arma at least, alot of other benches i've seen also rate 2600k higher)

try this bench for example:

hmmm, ok im pretty sure im gona go for the 2600k, but that last paragraph on the xbitlabs link Trackeri posted confused/worried me a bit:-

As a result, even if you intend to use a multi-GPU graphics configuration, we can recommend Core i7-2600K, despite the fact that the LGA1155 platform doesn’t support PCIe 16x + 16x for two graphics cards in their default mode.

Does this mean I cant run SLI if I go sandy bridge?

By the looks of it, it's just saying that they may not run at full bus speed (x16) so if you were thinking of SLI you may want to look into the Maximus IV and drop one of the extra PCI components (the soundblaster or the wireless card).

That looks great to me! :). Glad all of our advice helped in the end, and it's nice to see you want for the 3 year gold warranty! Like you said, onboard sound isn't far from what a premium sound card is these days so that will be fine :).

You'll have to take pictures and vids when you get it, I think i speak for everyone here when I say we all want to see what this beast looks like inside! ;).

All the best,

Steve

+rep for ordering such a beast ;)

we'll have to compare how yours performs against mine once we have them, and see how much extra horsepower your second 590 gives!

also, what kinda screen (s?) are you going to be using with it?

yea defo, on the photos and the comparison, id like to know if the extra 590 was worth it :D

iv been looking at an LG 23" LED screen but im still not sure, unfortunately my laptop died the same day i ordered the desktop (a whole month after i pyed £400 to have it repaird) so im struglin for internet acsess atm. :(
