VGA Issue

Hi,

I recently purchased a 15.6" COSMOS IX laptop. The monitor I have in my set up only has a VGA port though which the laptop doesn't.
I purchased a VGA to HDMI cable in the hope this would solve my problem but when I connect it all up I just get a black screen on my monitor.
I've tested the cable on my old laptop and it all works fine. I thought it might be a driver issue, but I'm not really sure.

Any advice on how to get this working would be appreciated! Thanks

VGA is analogue whereas HDMi is digital, so you have to have an active adapter to convert the signal.

A lot of scammers sell inactive cables which won’t work.

I get what you're saying but then why would it work on my old laptop?

This is the cable I purchased https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07QSW16HW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Some video drivers (such as the one in your old laptop it seems) support the older VGA (analog) protocols and that's most likely why it works with a passive cable. Modern video drivers (such as the one in your new laptop) do not support the VGA protocols and you must use an active converter (analog to digital).

Thank you that's super useful! I'll order a new one that uses an active converter. Thank you for your help and explaining to me why.

Hello, I tried buying a cable with an active converter but still no luck :( any other ideas?

Hello Bob. On your new laptop, can you reduce the screen resolution to match that of your old laptop, to see if the external monitor is then able to work?

It was worth a try :)

When the monitor is connected to your new laptop, does Windows detect the monitor in Display Settings?

What is the model of the external monitor? Might be worth checking online to see if there are any drivers for that particular model.

I managed to fix the issue! I had to change the refresh rate that the monitor had. That seems to have worked!

Thanks, everyone for your help it was much appreciated!
