Video editing new desktop

Hi everyone

It is 10 years since I bought my last PC which has been upgraded with SSD Graphics card new fan etc about 5 years ago, but it can't process 4k video off my Samsung phone

this is my probable replacement - any suggestions for improvement? I am also trying to keep the sound levels down as I sometimes record at my desk.

Hi @RossGarner399, I am looking at maybe a similar spec PC to you, I know you will be asked, what is your max budget for price? That spec comes in at £1,096.00 inc. VAT.

Do you do any photos editing or is it only video edit? For my it would be mostly photo work with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop and other things such as web development and a hobby interest in AI coding. What software do you use for video editing? I would expect most software websites will provide recommended spec though I do not know how reliable they are.

I would also like a quite PC, but only because I have had a laptop with a noisy fan for too many years now. I have wondered about the liquid cooler for processor cooling and if they might be better than a fan. But I have also thought that might be overkill at the Ryzen 5 level of CPU. Then that leads on to knowing how important the CPU is for the work you plan to do compared to how important the GPU is, questions such as choosing a Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7 or even a Ryzen 9.

Hopefully, someone more experienced will reply soon.

I was editing about 60 minutes of footage from the selfie camera on my Samsung a few days ago on Wondershare Filmora. No problems doing the editing (I have 4GB RAM) but it took 55 minutes to export to MP4. My CPU (i3 530 @ 2.93) reached 65 degrees C and my Graphics card Radeon HD 6450 was up to 52 degrees.

I don't think those temperatures are that bad, my laptop is often over 70 C and I've seen over 80 C sometimes, the CPU is i7-4700MQ @ 2.4 GHz and I have 12 GB RAM. It's running at about 55 C to 60 C now and I only have Chrome, Spotify and Evernote open besides a couple other smaller apps.

Though I am out of touch with what is possible and preferable. My laptop is coming up to 4.5 years old now, it's worked well but now I can afford a desktop I am hoping to get one this year.

If you have not got GPU Acceleration enabled, that could be causing it to use the CPU which I think is likely to struggle.

What will you be using the PC for, what monitor are you using (make and model or resolution and frame rate) and what is your maximum budget? There are a few areas where the build could be optimised. AMD processors like fast RAM, but there have been some compatibility issues with 3600MHz RAM. I am unsure whether this issue has been completely fixed.

Thanks for the input. It will be mainly a work computer. I do some video editing for work hence the desire for big RAM and a big SSD for programmes. I will store completed work on normal Hard drive.

I am happy with 1080p for display and output, but when I record off my Galaxy s8 main camera it is 12 MP which I can't process at all on my old pc (i3 with 4MB RAM).

I read a few reviews that suggested GPU does not need to be massive for editing . I use Wondershare Filmora X at the moment.
