Vortex IV 880m throttling

My 880m won't go above 900mhz on the core, will occasionally hit 915 but won't go anywhere near the 993 turbo it's supposed to hit

Is Clevo looking into this issue, because as it stands the 880m is barely quicker than the 780m at best, and actually is outperformed by an overclocked 780m!

Lots of posts on Google about this Clevo 880m throttling issue. MSI also suffered from it, but apparently released an updated BIOS to fix it

Any comment from PCS on this. also, FYI my GPU and CPU both timmed with IC Diamond, and GPU doesn't go above 85 degrees running furmark

It is designed to prevent the GPU going past damaging temperatures. It looks like the driver has set this temperature to 85c. Best way to get it to hit top clocks is to make sure its kept cool. You might want to get a laptop cooler for it.

So you're saying that anyone with an 880m in their laptop that expects it to run at it's advertised clock speed has to use a laptop cooler? I personally don't think that's right

If MSI can release a bios that fixes the issue I see no reason why Cleve can't. The throttling is a very real problem reported by many, many people

Anyone using a gaming laptop should consider a laptop cooler to improve longevity of the system. It gets very hot, at least where I use it.

The card hits its standard clock speed. You are trying to reach the boost speed which is essentially smart overclocking and will only do so when it is cool enough. Overclocking and high temperatures will damage your laptop!

The standard clock speed is 954 mhz and it's not hitting that. I don't want the card to be overclocked, i want it to use the boost feature that is being touted by Nvidia as part of the card.

If the boost is working on Alienware and now MSI machines, the problem lies with Clevo

What is it with people on the PCS forums? You seem to flat out refuse that anything is a problem and immediately jump on the defence despite all the evidence indicating there is or may be a problem. Search on google. Look. Make an attempt to educate yourself before just blindly saying "laptops run hot, use a cooler"

Here is also some "proof"

Furmark running and GPUz

GPU running at 58 degrees. Core running at 770Mhz

As it's running cool, it should at the least be running at 954mhz the stock clock.

Don't you think you are a bit to harsh? Did I offend you with my comment? Did I say I disagree? All I said is expressed my opinion regarding a laptop cooler, mine shut down when not using one in a hot classroom.

The problem still may not be with Clevo, there may be a setting that you may be able to change yourself, for example have you checked your power settings? There is also no need to try and insult the people of this forum, we are simply trying to help. We don't get paid to do this!

I'm not insulting anyone, i merely stated that there seems to be a tendency on this forum to deny that problems exists (the Optimus V fan noise was one issue) and now this 880m problem seems to be another. I've been a member on many forums like Guru3d and Overclockers for many, many years so it's not like i'm new to forums. I wasn't having a go at Keynes specifically.

As you can see from the image i posted above, it's not running anywhere near it's advertised speeds. Power is set to high performance, all settings checked etc. I'm certainly not new to this game.

Would be good to get some feedback from PCS directly, but raising a question via email can take up to a week for a reply. Then i reply, then it's almost another week for the next reply. I guess now it's open until 20:00 i could ring after work.

Try emailing pcs from your online account and link this thread. I usually get quick responses by doing it that way

I assume you are testing the clock speeds on mains power instead of just battery. If you are then I'd recommend phoning PCS, its the best way to get a response straight away.

These forums are not an official line of communication for PCS so its not often you will be able to get in touch with someone from PCS through the forums.

Yeah running on AC power, thanks for the heads up though, email doesn't seem to be a worthwhile communication method!

I think that, like the live chat service its primary purpose is for sales advice and PCS always recommend phone for tech support
