Vortex ST-S

Hey guys, looking at getting this from currys:

It's a PC specialist build that they sell. All good info except they dont tell you what the motherboard is. Does anyone know? Basically I want to know if it will support faster ram than the 2400mhz it comes with AND if it will support Intel Optane if I purchase it separately.

Cheers!

I would advise not buying from curry's, you may get more for your money going direct, and TBH, those builds are using entry level parts.

I priced up how much something similar would cost me direct from PCS and I'd be paying about £350 more. And I'm not seeing any difference in what Currys and PCS have stated they use.

If you post your budget we can spec something up for you which may be suitable.

When I say entry level parts, the core components like RAM, motherboard, PSU are all budget options in those builds.

Just specced up something like it on PCS and on PCS it's about £30 more, assuming that currys models has the bargain basement bits and pieces not listed.

Buying this and then spending money on upgrades is pointless. Post your max budget for everything all in and you'll get a much better AMD build posted up here.

So ideally my budget is around the £1400 mark (ish). For reference (so you can understand where I'm coming from) I can and was looking to get a laptop with following spec: i7 9750H, RTX 2060 (Mob), 16gb 2666mhz RAM, 512gb m.2 SSD with 1tb HDD 7200 RPM (and with Thunderbolt 3). All that for £1350 with my work discount. But I've decided to see what I could get tower wise for the same price. If I'm going to spend the same on a tower I'd like something that really blows that out of the water as even with full versions rather than laptop versions, I'm only seeing a 15-20% odd difference in performance. Doesn't feel like a good trade off. If I'm getting a tower, I want something meaty, that might get me into flight simulators and VR. I don't thing an RTX 2060 will handle that well enough.

Gaming, anything from RPG to VR and Flighg Simulators. Quite keen to break into VR to be honest. As for monitor, I haven't really decided, it's budget associated. I must confess i don't know much about common resolutions and refresh rates. I've been out of the game for a long time. Last time I had a gaming PC it had a GTX 570 GPU.

So what’s your budget for the monitor as that will determine what PC you need.

Would that actually be sufficient to be able to play VR, flight sims and be future proof enough? any recommendations on parts if that's the case?

I dont yet have one yet. I don't have anything capable of running VR. I am literally moving up from an old i5 laptop with a GTX 950m. Not much going for it at all. Was thinking one of the Occulus models.

Basically for VR, you'll need a minimum of an RTX 2070 Super, but preferably an RTX 2080 Super.

This would be a significantly better build than the PCWorld one, I know for a fact that they use extreme budget boards and PSU's and wifi cards to keep costs down, plus the cases leave a lot to be desired.

This is a rock solid base and the 2070 Super is excellent for entry level VR. Flight sims would likely benefit from a further 16Gb RAM depending on which one but you can add that yourself when you have some more cash.

I hope you don't mind be bumping this thread, but I am in a similar boat to OP and had my suspicions about the lack of detail in the Currys PC Specialist Vortex build - which brought me to this post.

I think the unique URL you have provided is almost exactly what I'm after, but I had a couple questions if you are able to answer:

1. The monitor I am looking to pair it against is the LG Ultragear 27GL83A-B - do you have any concerns or recommendations on the PC build based on this?
2. Would you recommend increasing the SSD from 512GB to 1TB? - I have no experience of PC gaming and thought it may be overkill, my only concern is that my console storage is 70% full and is 2TB (but I'm sure there's plenty games on there I haven't played in years)
3. Is there anything about the build you would recommend adding to further "future proof" it? For example, would I need a larger power supply or different motherboard if I were to think about upgrading the graphics card? Or are these expenses you would typically pair with the same time you purchase a new graphics card (can't see me upgrading this in the foreseeable future).
4. Since your original post, the 30 series graphics cards have been announced/released - would you recommend buying the 3070 in place of the 2070? I am not familiar with the differences at all - does the current build support the 3070?

The build I've ended up with (some very minor tweaks to case and SSD) can be found here:

Thanks

If you create your own thread in the sales advice forum, we can recommend something, most hardware from that build has been superceded now and there will be something more suitable.

Bear in mind prices have risen substantially due to covid and stock issues.
