Hi there,

Build below. I went for slower ram because as far as I can tell the actual performance difference is realtively small, and a smaller hard drive to save money as I won't have more than 2 games on it at any given time.

Thoughts?

Hah the budget was supposed to be £1500, but I figured the 2070 super was probably worth it to extend the life of the machine a bit so I am already way over budget.

Planning on using it for gaming, specifically total war and Baldur's Gate 3. The reason I am forking out for a 2070 is I'd like to get at least 3 years or so use out of it playing future titles.

I considered waiting until the next gen of cards, but realistically there will not be a laptop for less than £1700 available with next gen cards for at least 12 months by my estimate. Figuring the top end cards will get released September-December, then mid range Q1/Q2 next year. The first laptops that come out with them will therefore be Q2ish 2020, and are likely to be high spec ones from marquee manufacturers like ASUS etc. Even if tongfang etc come out with a next-gen chassis by Q2, I'd probably want to wait a month or so for reviews. So realistically I am looking for 12m if I want to wait for a midrange next-gen card in a laptop for £1700.

Criticism of this line of reasoning would be most welcome if I am missing something. I figure I get the 2070 and if in two years time I am hating it I can give the laptop to my son and get a new one, or get an EGPU.

I don't play much FPS and I'm a casual gamer so at most I'd have two games installed. If the storage space becomes an issue, could I not just add a second, more expensive hard drive? Trying not to further blow my budget atm.

The games you mention arent that intensive really... Are you set on a vyper chassis? I wish they had more Ryzen cpu options for their laptops, but remember new GPU's are due out in a few months, might be worth waiting to see what laptop range is around nov/dec?

The range in 17" doesnt feel as great as when I have bought laptops in the past, and I think with the new GPU's theres bound to be some new options in a few months on PCS too.

I've read reviews fairly extensively and am fairly confident that there are no better options for a 2070 at this price point. I'd be using it on office mode most of the time, gaming/turbo when I was in a good situation with noise cancelling headphones and a coolpad.

If I wanted a 2060 I'd look at some other options, for example the optimus, or equivalent versions from other manufacturers. My reasoning for the 2070 super is, having looked at some performance comparisons it seems we are talking a 15 to even 25% performance bump in benchmarks compared to 2060s with 4800Hs. I'm hoping that performance bump will buy another year or so of playing A++ titles on medium to high graphics.

Very open to alternative suggestions. Regarding the new GPU time frame, I'd be shocked if mid-tier cards came out before Feb/March next year. Factoring in 4 months for transmission to PCS and availability of mid-price options and it's June/July next year for release of an appropriately priced laptop. Add a month in for reviews, and that's a long wait.

I don't have any gaming PC or laptop atm - so I'd have to wait 12m for BG3, which I have been waiting for since 1998.

One thing I'll say is that the 15.6 recoil is a compelling alternative, which some like Jarrod tech suggest outperform the Fusion chassis. I'd be giving up some screen space which is a big deal, but gaining better thermals and performance.

I believe it's the Tongfang GM5MPHW chassis, although I may be wrong (please correct me if so)

It states the chassis model near the end of the quote, so yes, you're accurate on the model.

I would personally opt for the Recoil given the choice if it was purely for gaming. And yes, with any gaming laptop you want to overspec the GPU as much as possible as you can't change it in the future and it's going to be the first bottleneck.

With new GPU's in laptops, I don't think we'll be seeing them for some time like you say, there's usually quite a hefty delay between the desktop variants and the mobile cards. I would probably have roughly the same time frame of march or so. They're usually announced at CES in january and released in March.

You definitely want 2666MHz RAM, it's not much more expensive but will net you better FPS.

I would also choose Silver warranty for £5er.

Just a note, this chassis has Thunderbolt 3, you can add an eGPU in the future when the GPU is beginning to strugge, this will then give you years more premium performance for gaming, it's quite invaluable on a laptop:

Thanks, yep I'm now considering the Recoil simply on the basis of better cooling from the thicker chassis. However having looked closer at the performance it seems the benchmark results - timespy etc - are very similar with a sligtht edge going to the vyper, possibly due to a higher thermal limit on the vyper. I'm comparing Jarrod Tech and Bob of All Trades videos.

Does anyone have any thoughts about how I can compare the heat/performance trade off between the Recoil/Vyper? I have a hunch the Recoil will outperform in "real world" gaming, especially over longer sessions, but I'd like to verify this with some kind of data ideally.

Finally, screen size is a factor as at least half the time I won't be playing with a connected screen (hence why I'm not getting a desktop). 15.6 gaming laptops are popular so I'm assuming people game on them just fine, but my current work laptop is 17 inch so I'm not sure if the step down would bother me.

For me it would make a difference, I prefer having a full keyboard and i would miss the extra screen too.
But i never really bought it for portability, is was meant as a desktop replacement (i'm now going back to a desktop after 10 years)
