Vyper 17.3 - Oculus Quest 2 / Rift S

Hi All, I currently have both the Quest 2 and Rift S and im looking to buy an updated laptop. Currently I have a 17.3" Octane, with an i7-6700 and a GTX 980 desktop. Looking for something that is a bit easier to lug around, and with a better graphics card and the GTX 980 is struggling to run games at 90hz and 1832x1920 per eye resolution. Id like better battery life, but know that will probably be the trade off. Im interested in the Vyper 17.3 but cant tell if its suitable for use with my oculus devices. Can anyone give any feedback or an alternative suggestion?
Thanks
Dave

I too would like to know the answer to this exact question!
You're welcome of course to note any replies to @dorrisdormouse's thread, but please don't hijack it with questions of your own - otherwise it's going to get very complicated very quickly.

If you want advice on your own proposed build please start your own thread. Thanks. :)

Hi ubuysa,

Please note that in my reply I stated "I too would like to know the answer to this exact question!"
With emphasis on the word "exact" I stated that I wished to know the answer to this user's question as well, rather than pose my own. I wrote this so that I could bump this user's question, as well as ensure I was notified of replies as well. I felt this was more appropriate than writing another identical post, however I am happy to do so if this is forum etiquette.

That's fine, but do be careful you don't hijack the thread.

Hi I have the Vyper 17.3 I had read another form threat that said it would work with oculus devices. I cannot get this to work with my quest 2. It doesn’t not have the correct display port to work with the rift s

Thanks, I'll be looking for something else then :) Hope you get it sorted though. I had a look at the reviews of the laptop in Eluktronics guise and saw that there are options to disable the intel GPU, which might help you? I saw a BIOS level switch, dunno if theres any other MUX switch?

I’ve tried everything it’s so frustrating, my Vyper is less than a month old and I bought it to plug in my new quest. if you turn off the intel GPU the NVIDIA doesn’t seams to work ?!

The response I got from PC Specialist via E-Mail was:

We currently only have the current version available and you are welcome to search the chassis information online and hopefully it can provide more detailed answers - TongFang GM7MP7P (8GB RTX-2070, i7-10875H, 144Hz, Blank KB).

This particular chassis does have GPU switching technology which is handy, I understand that it has a manual and automatic function to control both internal graphics components.

From information I have been provided with previously I understand that the Thunderbolt connection links directly in with the PCI-E interface, it has a video feed due to this but I would clarify with Oculus if this would be a compatible method of usage first.

For the Rift S you _should_ be able to use a thunderbolt/USB C to display port adapter if the Thunderbolt connection is direct to PCI-E.
Are you connecting the Quest 2 to the thunderbolt port? I wonder if that might help? It just works on my old Clevo so i've not really tried anything else.

Hey ! I finally got my vyper 17.3 to work with the quest. Looks like it was my antivirus bull guard that came with the laptop that was blocking it all along ! Although it could have also been other setting adjustment I made when fault finding that also contributed.
So I can confirm the quest 2 works with the Vyper 17.3 though it’s USB C thunderbolt.

Ok awesome, I'll keep that in mind when choosing. With the lack of availability before xmas I delayed my purchase, and it looks like there may be new laptops available in January with Nvidia 3000 series GPU's couple with Ryzen processors, so im thinking of waiting and seeing what is announced. If there are good deals on these though at that point its certainly still an option.

RTX3000 mobiles will likely not be released until March. They’re usually announced along with new laptop chassis at CES in January and released around March.
