Vyper 17 for CAD / Gaming

Hello there!

as an architect and casual gamer, Im interested in buying here in Germany a nice 17" laptop with a good display (around 100% sRGB, optional 100% adobeRGB too), i7-10875H, RTX 2070 Super, decent battery and no gamer looks; and the Vyper 17 seems to be a really good price/performance laptop.

USE: work (AutoCAD, Vectorworks, Revit - BIM, Rhinoceros, 3DS+Vray for renderings, Photoshop, Indesign, etc.) and casual caming (RDD2, Fifa20, Assassins Creed, Total War, Flight simulator?, etc)

DISPLAY PWM: the display model is NV173FHM-N44. It seems to be a decent kind-of-IPS (a-Si TFT-LCD ADS) display with 300cd/m2, contrast 1/1200, EDelta 2.5-4.0, 92% sRGB, 60% AdobeRGB, but it does use PWM at 940-990Hz (same display as XMG Neo 17 - see review below). I do use the laptop frequently for long periods, so i dont want to end with headaches or similar...so is PWM at that frequency noticeable?

DISPLAY COLOR: it could have a better color accuracy to work with as it offers less than 100% but 92% sRGB, DeltaE2000 of 2.65 (calibrated 1.5) and the response time is not really fast with 12-19ms. Other laptops like Aero 17, MSI GS75 or GS66, Lenovo Legion 7i offer better displays with 100% sRGB or even near 100% AdobeRGB (but 4K slower 60hz displays). Should 92% sRGB be enough for a decent color reproduction for example in Photoshop? can we expect new displays for the Vyper 17 coming soon? or first next year with the Ampere GPUs?

SSD: would you recommend me the Samsung EVO 970 1TB against the Intel 665p 1TB for 90€ more?

RAM: sometimes I will work with heavy CAD / BIM files, so I was thinking on buying 2x16GB against the usual 2x8GB, makes sense? overkill?

I have this laptop and it really is the best laptop I have ever owned. I will caveat that with one issue though which is the performance on battery is terrible and it seems to be a problem with the Vyper 17 inch.

You can improve it by manually configuring the PL1 and PL2 states for the CPU (a more detailed discussion on the issue can be found here: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/foru...le-performance-when-running-on-battery.72509/)

PCS are aware of this issue and their R&D department are looking into getting a fix from Tong Fang but that may be a little while coming.

As it stands if you are going to be using this laptop primarily on mains power and the battery performance doesn't even come into your thinking I could not rate this laptop highly enough.

If you are going to use it on battery power extensively and are happy with configuring CPU properties using something like XTU or ThrottleStop again I would highly recommend it.

However if you are going to need to use the laptop on battery power and you are not comfortable with implementing the temporary fix I really cant recommend this laptop at the moment.

Thanks barlew! I would like to have a decent battery with at least 4h while watching movies, internet,etc., but its not my priority (and if that issue is going to be solved in the future than perfect :). Btw nice work searching for the problem and looking for a solution!

Besides that, I would like to receive some tips about the questions I asked :)

Right as for your other questions, I will help were I can:

SSD: I would actually get the 1TB PCS m.2 drive instead of either. Intel have serious questions surrounding the long term use of the drives and for my money the Samsung drive does not offer enough performance gains (for what I would use it for any way) to justify the extra cost.
You could actually get two 1TB PCS m.2 drives for the cost of one Samsung one. This is what I have in my laptop.

RAM: If you are doing serious CAD work the 2x32GB RAM is definitely a wise choice.

You could actually get two 1TB PCS m.2 drives for the cost of one Samsung one. This is what I have in my laptop.

And what about the display and its PWM? is it something to be worried about? and have you tried to calibrate it?

If they offer an optional display with 100% sRGB I would be very happy haha

I didn't not respond to the PWM bit mate as I have no idea what PWM is haha what I can tell you is I have absolutely no complaints about the screen.

PWM is Pulse-Width-Modulation or Screen Flickering = To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

And according to some reviews of the same display in similar laptops, it does use PWM below 99% at 990Hz....and that was my question about, if its noticeable at all or not :)

The only time I've ever come across PWM was a number of years ago in a radar theory course and I didn't think that would be applicable haha.

But i can safely at least with my Vyper it is not noticeable.

Hi there!

im about to finally buy the Vyper 17,3" with i7-10875H, RTX 2070 Super, 2x16GB RAM Corsair 2666mhz, 2x 1TB PCS PCIe M.2 SSD and no OS for 1950€.

I've been trying to find a better alternative with a better display (100% sRGB or more, HDR, etc.), but I came to the conclusion that this is the best price/performance 17,3" laptop with the RTX 2070 Super non-MaxQ at the moment in Germany. Sadly there are a few really good 17,3" displays but much more expensive, and those with 100% sRGB/AdobeRGB 15,6" usually offer just Max-Qs.

Back to topic = each 1TB PCS PCIe M.2 SSD costs me around 110€, and as im buying it without OS, I could buy just one and buy the other SSD at the same price in amazon:

Samsung 970 EVO 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD (not Pro, not Plus) for 120€
Western Digital SN550 Blue 1TB M.2 PCIe NVME SSD for 105€
Western Digital SN750 Black 1TB M.2 NVME SSD for 120€
Crucial P1 M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 1TB for 100€

Are those SSDs more worth it? does the PCS SSD has NVMe? what does it really mean if it doesnt?

I couldnt find any benchmark for the PCS SSD, so at the same price I would first trust more those SSD as they are more known...what would you recommend me?

I just ordered the 128gb option and bought the 2x 970 Evo 1TB in another store for 220€ both and installed myself! it was almost the same price as 2x PCS SSD 1TB

I see... But in this case basically you've selected the cheapest drive to be replaced.

Just bought mine, I think we basically bought the same configuration ;-)

I heard on the other topic (sticked on top) they're going to solve the bios problem very soon.
(At least this is what I've understood).
