Vyper 17 Slow on Battery

I've actually already replaced it by an absolute monster of a laptop from a competitor.

It is a sad day but I have come to the end of my time as a PCS customer. I have had too many laptops with issues over the years and too many times I've had them returned either with incorrect components or still faulty.

I have acknowledged before that I am obviously freakishly unlucky with their products but I'm just not willing to risk that 5th laptop.
It’s such a shame and I don’t blame you one bit after the experience you’ve had.

You’ve been so great on the forums helping others troubleshoot and offering advice based off your own troubles.

This Vyper chassis has been a catastrophe unfortunately.

Thanks Ubuysa. I'll continue hanging around the forums, its a great community here and just because I no longer have a PCS laptop doesn't mean I have to leave it (i hope).

Nah - but dont expect any help if your new machine breaks :) :) :D :D :D :) :) ;) ;)

I dont understand how they can continue to offer it currently.
Removing it for the time being would be much better than continuing to sell something that isn't fit for purpose.

Just a quick question, a bit off-topic but still within the same subject: Do you guys think that issues are happening more frequently on TongFang chassis instead of Clevo's?

Because I've been on this forum for a while now and I have this impression. Apart from the battery performance on the Vyper 17, I also remember a lot of complaints about keyboards peeling off, as well as screens falling from the frame and I think all those were on TongFang chassis. It might be just coincidence, but it looks to me that Clevo has better-designed chassis overall?

@barlew , your old problematic Vortex was from TongFang or Clevo, do you know?

I have to conclude yes to this, and as such, I personally won't be recommending any more TongFang chassis going forward. I've had this niggling feeling increasing over the last few months. We've had more screen failures, keyboards failing for no apparent reason, and now this issue with the Vyper.

There definitely seems to be a quality issue with them imho.

I definitely think Clevo's are a lot more robust.

The Vortex was a Clevo chassis. However the problems with that were more the fact it was a dud system rather than that particular model having problems.

I certainly have seen very few posts about problems with the latest Vortex.

I certainly have noticed Tong Fang chassis seem to top the technical support threads.

So a very interesting development which may be pure coincidence and completely unrelated but the 17" Vyper is no longer available on the PCS website.

Its not longer listed under 17" laptops. The only place i can find it now is under DTR but the images on the links have been removed and when you click on them they no longer take you to the Vyoer.

The 17” laptops keep chopping and changing at the moment, probably due to availability.

The Vyper disappeared a short time back then reappeared and then disappeared again now.

We were down to just 3 models to choose from but I see there are currently 4 at the moment.

Also a lack of AMD in the 17” currently.

Could be due to the 3000 series laptops being announced at CES this week?

I think it might be a mix between that and the shortage of GPUs at the moment... I think they're focusing on the manufacturing of 3000 chips, which are also scarce for desktops at the moment due to high demand.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think the 3000 mobile laptops would only start to be widely available in 3-4 months time. Only a few lucky ones might be getting their hands on those in advance.

This is the response I've been given any advice. Disappointing as I copied Chris post etc into the email.

First and foremost, thank you for getting in touch with us and for your patience with this reply.

I am sorry to hear that the laptop is not fit for purpose.

Please note on battery alone you would get around up to 5hours (mileage may vary.)

For demanding performance-related tasks and using the dedicated GPU, it is recommended to have the laptop plugged in as the AC adapter supplies the extra power for the graphics card under load. This will most likely be the case for our other high-end laptops.

As the system is outside the return period, we wouldn't be able to exchange the laptop for a different model.
Both the first 14 days for a return upon the initial receipt of the computer or the first 30 days for a return if there is a confirmed fault upon the initial receipt of the computer.

If we can assist you any further, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Many Thanks

5 hours is a bit optimistic, I get around 2 if I'm lucky. I wish there was an official statement saying if we are actually eligible for a refund on this laptop.

The thing is they have admitted there is a issue they cannot fix, and several people have been given refunds yet that's the response I've been given.
Awful customer service and such a generic reply since I copied Chris messages into the message I sent them

Go back and ask it to be escalated and actually link this whole thread in.

@DGeraghty So first up I don't think anyone has been issued a refund yet? Correct me if I am wrong guys. I have been told I will receive a refund if the technicians report backs up my complaint.

Reading the email you received, it looks like you got a customer service bod who is not aware of the issue. I skipped customer service completely and emailed the complaints department.

If I were you I would forward the email trail you have to the complaints department, raise a formal complaint and state your laptop is not of satisfactory quality or fit for purpose as defined by the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (assuming you are in the UK).

You need to bear in mind that PCS are not obliged to automatically refund you. They are within their rights to offer you a repair or a replacement the refund really depends on how old the laptop is and whether you have already given them a chance to make good.

I am in the position where I can insist on a refund as the Vyper was a replacement for a faulty Vortex which I gave them the chance to repair multiple times and then I accepted the Vyper as a replacement. Now that that replacement is also not fit for purpose I can insist on a refund.

Thanks for the advice. I have had it since end of September early October.
I will do what you have said and escalate it to the complaints department and link in this whole thread

So its less than 6 months old?
That being the case under UK consumer law it is presumed the fault was present when you purchased the laptop. On top of that it is the sellers responsibility to prove otherwise not yours.

You have to give them a chance to make good. i.e. repair or replace.
If after that, it still does not work they have to give you a refund obviously as long as the laptop actually is faulty.
Do note however that they do not have to give you a full refund they are within their rights to deduct monies for the use you have had out of the laptop.

That being said if I were you I would argue the toss for the full refund.

Hi guys!

so they did remove the Vyper 17,3" from their website, but they have just released a new model called "17,3" IONICO", which seems to use the same Tongfang body.

For me as an architect it would have been a better option (i bought the Vyper 3 months ago) as it offers a QHD 100% sRGB display...too late I guess. It also offers the new RTX3060/3070 (Max-Q or not?) while keeping the same i7-10875H.

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/ionico-17/

So are they still using the same Tongfang body despite the performance problems? i've tried to test mine while using it on battery, but haven't noticed any drop of performance...but it was just watching a movie or youtube. How should I correctly test it?

Many thanks!
