Wi-Fi 6 AX200 not connecting via 5ghz

Hi, I recently ordered a new PC and noticed that my download and uploads speeds are much slower (30mbs download) than any other devices connected to my router.
After doing some investigation I noticed that the AX200 wifi card is connected to my router using 2.4Ghz, when I connect it using 5Ghz the internet doesn't work at all, and pinging the default gateway just times out.
The wifi antennas are connected at the back of the PC. I also updated the driver to the latest version. My router is Virgin Media Hub 3.0 and supports both 2.4ghz and 5ghz and many of my other devices are connected via 5ghz.

Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks!

I ended up using my Hub3 in modem mode with a separate router as the wi-fi on it was next to useless. I've now got the Hub 4 and it's MUCH better.

If you are sure you don't have anything using the 2.4ghz band, then you could turn it off in the Virgin hub, and possibly change the 'wireless mode' to disable legacy ones.

You could try giving the 2 bands different names, so you know if you're trying to connect to the 2.4 or 5g bands.

Thanks for the reply! I forgot to mention that I do use google Wifi with Hub 3.
Connecting from PC to either google wifi/hub 3 only works using 2.4ghz. Once I connect using 5Ghz, the internet connection gets really unstable with 0.14mbs download speed and frequent drops.
I tried your suggestion to disable 2.4ghz and connect to 5ghz just to test it and got the same result.
Most of my devices are connected using the 5Ghz and are working fine.

Try this:
Under the Network and Internet Settings tab - Change adapter options - right click on Wi-Fi Adapter - Properties - Client for Microsoft Networks - Configure - Advanced - Under Property, select '802.11a/b/g Wireless Mode' - Set the Value to 'Dual Band 802.11a/g' rather than 'Dual Band 802.11a/b/g'.

Just to rule out the obvious, do your other devices get good connection to the 5GHz signal when in the same location as the PC? 2.4GHz is slower but better able to penetrate barriers like thick walls.

Thanks for the suggestion. Just tried it but got the same result with 5ghz, 2.4ghz still works fine.

My phone is connected using 5Ghz and this is the speed I get from the same location as my pc.

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately, it didn't work, still getting the same when connecting using 5Ghz, the network is really slow and eventually, it drops.

This was a known issue on that card but with very old drivers.

Can you go into device manager, into network adapters, find the wifi card:

Right-click the wireless adapter and select Properties. Click the Driver tab to see the wireless adapter property sheet. The Wi-Fi driver version number is listed in the Driver Version field.

Can you post a screenshot?

I updated the driver to the latest version a few days ago while investigating this issue, also tried a few older drivers from https://www.intel.com/content/www/u...i-fi-drivers-for-intel-wireless-adapters.html

That is the correct version.

You've ruled out aerials by reapplying
You've ruled out drivers
You've ruled out signal issues as other devices can connect fine and works ok on 2.4GHz

2 options in my mind remain:

1/. Electomagnetic interference nearby - is the PC power cable running near the aerials, if so move it as far away
2/. Hardware issue with the card.

The others may have some steps to try.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions! It turned out to be interference, I moved the cables out of the way, and was able to connect to 5Ghz and got much better speeds now. Thanks again!

Well, that's more like it, well done.

5GHz is far more susceptible to electromagnetic interference, whereas 2.4GHz basically was never bothered by it because it's such a broad spectrum compared.

That's really good for me to know though, because this does come up from time to time and I always forget about the power cable.

Really pleased it was an easy fix (y)
