Will this Lafite IV run Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Desktop?

Hi,

Looking for advice as to whether this spec will run Ubuntu 20.04 please. Also, I don't really understand the difference between a storage drive and an M.2 drive. I think I'd just want the latter, but don't see how you just select that.

The reason for having two drives is typically for backup of data, running two or more operating systems on independent drives or storage of large files. A single M.2 SSD should be fine. M.2 SSD drives are more expensive than SATA SSD (or standard HDD), so an option would be to go for a minimal single M.2 SSD and add the additional storage if you think you need it with a second, cheaper drive. With a 2TB SSD (overkill?) you would probably never need a second drive. I went for 256GB and will backup/store data in the cloud and on an external HDD.

I am waiting for an i5 version of the same laptop you have requested to run Arch linux on it (or my current Ubuntu LTS if I get bored or run into too many issues). I went for a PCS PCIe M.2 SSD (1900 MB/R, 1100 MB/W) rather than the more expensive and more durable/faster NVme equivalent drive. I think it will work with either Arch or Ubuntu based upon other forum entries (https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/threads/linux-laptop-compatibility.60811/)

I did have a lingering doubt about NVMe compatibility with linux, hence I went for a vanilla M.2. It seems to be only the PRO version of the LafiteIV that has issues with NVme SSDs, but it was unclear. I will post in the linked forum once/if I get my laptop running linux.

The Lafitte Pro problem with NVMe drives was a BIOS issue. PCS have said they are in contact with the chassis maker about this so hopefully it can be resolved. Other machines seem to work fine with NVMe drives.

OK, I have the LafiteIV with the single M.2 SSD and it is up and running EndeavourOS (Archlinux). I had to boot the test version of windows, shutdown once past the setup and hit F2 whilst powering back on to get to the bios.

It looked like the secure boot was disabled, but it was not. I went into the boot options and disabled UEFI Boot, booted EndeavourOS from the USB stick, the rest was all straightforward from there.

I need to assign the keys for volume control, keyboard backlight and install a few apps, but otherwise everything is working. I ran
sudo lshw -short
and it garbled that the drive was identified as NVMe?

/0/100/1d.4/0 /dev/nvme0 storage 256GB PCS PCIe M.2 SSD
/0/100/1d.4/0/1 /dev/nvme0n1 disk 256GB NVMe disk

So far, so good. And a very nice, quiet laptop!
