No you cannot due to your Windows 7 installation being unique in a sense. You will need to do a fresh installation of Windows 7 on your new PC. Of course you can attatch your old HDD and copy files over afterwards.

Windows creates a key based on your hardware, changing the drive like this will have either and or the following results:

1. Windows will not boot as the chipset drivers are wrong
2. It will boot and will fail activation as a significant hardware change has been detected.
3. It will boot after going into safe mode and ripping out all the old drivers and then you are faced with 2.

And as a side note if the license is OEM it is tied to that specific machine and therefore against MS t&c's making it in effect piracy.

That's a shame, I was hoping to de-install then re-install windows 7 when I finally get around to buying a new computer.

Retail versions can be transferred, OEM versions cannot.

Just out of interest, do PCS supply an OEM or Retail copy when an OS is purchased?

They supply OEM as far as I know, mine is certainly OEM (retail would probably be a lot more expensive).

Right okay, that's fair enough as, like you say, it brings the price down.

looks like a retail upgrade pack to me!

Indeed it does, but don't ever judge a book by it's cover is my rule, lol. I've seen OEM hardware and software/os's on Amazon (some distributed by Amazon themselves) having images of full 'standard' retail boxing etc.

I can confirm that this is retail, however it will not come in a box, it comes in a little black microsoft sleeve.

Yes but these copies may legally only be kept for backup purposes providing you have a legit disc and key.
