What's the heat / fan-noise like on this model (when doing light work, and when under heavy load)? Also, what's the battery life like?

Not sure if you have tried, but what I would do is: Boot from a Manjaro KDE live CD, see if the audio works. Install "SOF Firmware", see if that works (I think it's sudo apt install firmware-sof-signed on Ubuntu). Package details here...

You could try installing https://www.sofproject.org/ - not sure how to do this on PopOS, should be easy enough to find out though.
