Currently looking to upgrade my system (well, buy a new on even). The issue I have is not being able to obtain a 7800x3d as appears to be the one to go for in gaming (and heard issues of the latest version of Ryzen not performing as they should in the x3d regard).
Old System (From PCS but my mate gave it to me years ago for free):
i9-7980XE
X-299E mobo
32gb RAM32gb RAM
GTX 1080 Ti - This appears to be dying as after checking rest of system and no problems (memory etc) I have the issue of the GPU crashing and restarting the PC (initially when a game shuts down, now sometimes in the middle of them. Reduced Power Output to minimum (46%) and relieves the issue a bit where the GPU was throwing a wobbly at 60 degrees even though within usual ranges)
2 x different NVMe SSDs and an old HDD (reusing as extra storage, though probably not the old 1TB HDD)
PG348 monitor (reusing).
Corsair keyboard (reusing)
Altec speakers (SOOO OLD but reusing, talking up to 20 years!)
The 1080 Ti failing is what prompted my next step since the system is OLD.
This is the spec I had been looking at, for gaming only really, with a budget around £2000. But if I can get it for £10 that would be better!:
Fractal North TG Gaming Case
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
ASUS TUF B650-PLUS
32GB Corsair Vengence DDR5 6000MHz
12GB ASUS TUF GEFORCE RTX 4070 SUPER OC Edition
1TB SAMSUNG 990 PRO M.2.
CORSAIR 750W CX Series
CORSAIR H100x RGB Elite Cooler
1 x 120 PCS Black Case Fan (PCS had this so carried it over)
Windows 11 (Home)- although I do not need it as have a license it seems like a pain to order one pre-built but minus the OS so I would need to setup/test the system myself.
So the main problem is the 7800X3D shortage (now 31/01/25 at least) meaning that is now off the menu. Advise has been to use the 9800X3D, though being about £150 more for in theory a "worse" chip (considering my requirements) for my purposes and being stickler for making the correct choice was not sure if giving up on the 7800 was the right thing to do.
£2,116 for the 9800X3D system, £1,968 for the 7800X3D (If it reappears one day), £2,000 if it were the Ryzen 9 7900X3D (this one is the issue of using correct cores etc?).
1) Am I thinking along the right lines regarding the CPU (Yes I know the GPU is king, but not willing to throw even more on the better offerings like the 4080/90 and Tis)?
2) Is the rest of the system overkill/just right/lacking.
3) Theory on a new Windows 11 licence.
4) Budget is around £2000. I was willing to go for the above at £1,968 but not so much with £2,116 for the other chip (or any others since I see the other newer X3Ds are now out of stock too, but not the 9800X3D), but mainly due to lack of knowledge on the subject after reading up on the situation. Is the 9800X3D overkill for me IF say I had the 7800X3D option. Currently it is a lot down to the shortage that lead me here. I know it just a £150 difference but I was originally going to stop at around £1000 before I delved further.
5) Primarily FPS/Survival type games. Waiting for STALKER 2 next week.
EDIT:
This is the current build to be purchased, in the correct format, after advice taken:
