Extreme high memory usage after installing 14Tb HDD

Hi all,

I have a build from PC specialist, had it build in 2019, had some startup issues, but after that was resolved happy days with my PC.
I have recently bought WD 14TB HDD, needed the extra storage and bought a Ultrastar DC HC530 HDD.

Before I changed the HDD, I had a 6Tb slower Seagate HHD installed, but that HDD slowed everything down badly, memory usage after startup would be less then say 25%, now it is 85% or higher, and I have 32Gb memory installed.

What can I do to bring down this memory usage?

Many thanks in advance

Hi there,

Can you post up the same screenshot only showing the items actually below the headings. Also if you could sort the order heading by memory utilisation largest to smallest that would be great.

Would help if you would show that whole window rather than just the total, and order it by memory usage so we can see what is using said memory.

Edit: oops, Scott beat me to that comment by a few seconds :)

That looks fairly standard. My guess is now that you may have knocked the RAM while installing the drive. Could you click on the "Performance" tab and post up the screenshot.

Hi Scott,

The only thing that was changed in my PC was I changed on of the hard drives for this new WD HDD. In my case, a CORSAIR CARBIDE SERIES™ AIR 540 GAMING CASE, the HDD's, 2 in total/max, are on the bottom of the case, and below the GPU, and the memory is located above the GPU, so no way I knocked the memory in any way, and I have taken out the 2 HDD's on more then 1 occasion and never had any trouble.
I have attached the screenshot you asked for.

Thanks,

Marinus

Hmmm, this is the strange bit:

Something has gone a bit funny here (my paged pool is 621MB).

Hopefully someone can shed some light as to what's happened here

RAM looks fine but that "In Use" value seems very high to me. I don't think I've ever been that high with 16GB.

Looks like it could be a memory leak to me.

What does the memory usage show immediately after a reboot, without having any browsers open or anything. Completely fresh reboot without anything being opened?

I am in the middle of something, shouldn't take to long though, will reboot and check and post another screenshot of the memory usage.
Thanks for your help so far.

Before you reboot could you run the resource monitor and see what's showing as eating the RAM from there? I can't access it in work to show you an example.

Hi Scott,
I didn't see your request for the resource monitor screenshot, so unfortunatley I don't have one before the reboot.
Memory usage after the reboot was a whopping 13%, and right now it's 15%, see the attached screenshot.

I am embarrased nowto see the memory usage so low, and stays low for now. I'll go ahead and do my usual stuff, if the memeory usage shoots up I'll upload the resource monitor screenshot before I reboot.

It seems very much like a memory leak. There could be many reasons for it. I'm confident if it re-appears that we can narrow it down with the resource monitor though :)

Thank you so far, I'll keep a close eye on the memory usage, and if it is high I will make screenshots of the resource monitor and upload them here.

Many thanks,

Marinus

Yip, definitely could be. My thoughts were on a driver though as I think Norton would show the issue under the task manager.

It's typically drivers and the likes that are hidden from view there.

You I'd have thought that something like that would've show in that list as well
