Fans not wired correctly?

The big hub is showing (Commander Core) its just transparent as it controls the H150i, the other fans can connect to the big hub for speed but not RGB but to be honest it's probably easier just set the top and rear fans at a set RPM that's as quiet as you like via BIOS or Armoury Crate and cooling won't be a problem.
What's the problem with the RGB side of things?

If the case fans are Corsair too, they should be able to be plugged into the Commander Core. It supports 6 fans for PWM (speed) and RGB. One side has 6 ports for PWM and other side has 6 ports for RGB.

This is correct, you can mix fan types (ML & LL) however it works better if all the fans are one type (I've got all LL's), when you do it for best effect make sure that the fans are connected in the following order on the commander core, bottom front on #1, middle #2, top #3, front roof #4, rear roof #5, rear fan #6, this means scenes such as rain will start off at the bottom front and work their way to the back of the case

Although if you get it wrong (as my PCS builder did), you can rearrange the order in iCUE on the Lighting Setup page by dragging and dropping the fan icons to match the colour the fans are showing in the case:

Yeah, I'd noticed that.
I might just bite the bullet and get 6 LL fans and do it all in one hit. Seems daft to rewire it twice.

The existing case (rather than cooler fans) are LL, so you only need 3 more LL fans, I got mine that i needed off of Amazon

Im not sure they are. I've seen no sign of leds on the outer ring. I'll wire them into the commander before I proceed, just to make sure....
I've found somewhere selling the LL 120's for £19 each ;)

I went the path of keeping the MLs in the cooler and replacing the Cooler Master fans in the case with ML Elites to match. (The ML Elite has the 8 LEDs, the ML PROs only have 4). My thinking being that the higher RPM of the MLs would be beneficial in the context of pushing through a radiator, as the LLs top out at 1500, versus the 2500 RPM for the cooler MLs.

For some reason Corsair uses 2500 RPM MLs for AIOs, but 2000 RPM MLs for separate retail.

The Corsair fan dynamic frustrates me no end. When I bought the 4000X to transplant my system into I went similar to @Martinr36 and picked up a set of three SP120 Elites to match the case fans, along with a Commander Pro. It’s all seamless now.

But when I had the Corsair 220T case with the older SP fans, a H100i RGB Platinum with the MLs and a random LL120 as exhaust it was a tiresome and tedious process to get any kind of theme.

The iCue software is fantastic but their mentality towards fan compatibility has made for some sleepless nights in the past 😑

I think the 4000x comes with Airguide RGB

I didn’t think you could mix fan types for RGB as LL and ML have a different LED count? I read somewhere they were going to change firmware to allow it but don’t think it ever happened?

I think that only applies to the Corsair RGB Fan LED Hub.

Someone did actually get direct feedback from Corsair about this recently, most fans are 8 or 16 LED's and those are treated the same, so fully compatible and it listed the particular models.

I'm trying to find the thread, will post a link when I find it.

Edit: Found it, kudos to @techguyone for this:

"OK I've had a response from Corsair direct.

CORSAIR Cooling Product Manager
Autodetect pings each fan for it's LED count on the port, get assigned a fan type.
If you have multiple fan types, it'll read under Elite Capellix as 9-LED Fan, QL, LL or whatever on the right, grouped by fan type since there's some fan specific modes, we had to implement this way.
Pretty straightforward.

Looks like you can mix and match now "

And there was another little piece from the corsair forums on the same thread:

"The original SP-RGB fans run a completely different protocol for the RGB than any of the other fans. While you can get away with mixing LL and ML on the same channel (though effects may be weird), you absolutely cannot put the SP-RGB fans on the same channel. They won't work at all.

Note that the SP-RGB Pro and SP-RGB Elite, the newer ones, don't have that issue. This is only the original SP-RGB fans."
