Hi guys, my new PC arrived Monday and I very quickly noticed that the CPU temperature is running much too high -as soon as I turned it on this morning it was idling at 60C (it's now idling at 45C which is fine but as soon as I try to do something it will shoot back up again). I installed Prime 95 just to give it a quick test and even on the lightest test the CPU immediately shoots up to 98C and it's scaring me to death.

I know nothing about overclocking but I think it's overclocked. MSI Afterburner hardware monitor is reporting the clock speed as being at 5500 and hits a max of 5750 and taskmanager says utilization 2% and it's speed is hovering around the 5GHz, but it says the base speed is only 4.5GHz.

I don't want my PC overclocked so that it last three glorious years and then burns out in a blaze of glory, I just want it to run normally and last a decade. If it's overclocked can someone tell me how to get it running normally please or does it need to go back to PCS to be looked at? I've looked in the Bios settings and I can't see anything that looks like it would be responsible for any overclocking.

Is the cooler pump operating at full capacity? In any case, the 7950X run pretty hot at 5.7Ghz.🔥

AMD claims that CPU can happily spend it's whole life at 95ºc without any detrimental effects, as that's what it's been tested and designed for.

Phew, ok I didn't understand much in those articles but I did read that the CPU is supposed to run at 95C so I feel a lot better now. I guess the 7950X is just overclocked as standard then -I almost had a heart attack yesterday when I tried to render a picture in Daz 3D and my CPU instantly shot up to 95 degrees lol.

Thank you guys, panic over.

It's not 'overclocked' it just has a working range of 4.5-5.7GHz...but if you've got a particularly good example, it will automatically increase the boost clock higher as long as it stays within the max temp and max power limits that AMD has set.

If you're uncomfortable with that and want to limit it, then you can use AMD Ryzen Master to limit the temp, the power, or the frequency.

Oh I see, I thought 4500 was what it was supposed to run at and 5700 was what it theoretically could reach if you overclocked it.

Thank you so much Tony, I feel much better now :)

I'm not attacking or criticising or anything but could you please edit your title to remove the suicide part as making light of such a serious issue is not great and could upset people..personally, it makes me uncomfortable seeing people making light of it (this comes from personal history), especially on a forum that you'd never expect it to be found. As I said, I'm not attacking you or anything, just bringing it to your attention. Thank you

Title changed, however I hadn't realised you'd also messaged here.

Fair comment, I see steaky360 has already dealt with it :)

As others have said, the idle temps are absolutely fine, and even the stress test temps are also fine. You've got a decent cooler on there so it's all good!

Not sure if you do much gaming, but I'm just going to take the opportunity to pimp out my giveaway thread. I've been giving away unused Steam keys on this forum since early 2021 and I'm always on the lookout for more people to give games to. I'm not quite old enough to be Santa, but I tick most of the other boxes. There's a wide range of genres and you just might find something you're interested in.

Yeah I think I panicked because I'd never seen a CPU go that hgh before ha ha so thank you and everyone else who commented to say it's all good and yep I looked through your list and that Victoria 3 key sure looks sexy to me -I've only played one game on my PC so far and that is Stellaris so that shows just how big a Paradox fan I am lol.

You’ve got the right processor for a paradox games

I would check the settings of the cooler. As much as ramping up to 95C isn't bad for the CPU, it sounds a little quick to get there. If the cooler is on "Quiet" mode then it's going to under-perform for when the system us under load. Ideally you want to have it on standard for general use and extreme when really caning it.
