MS Flight Simulator 2020 spec PC: comments on adequacy?

VRAM does more along the lines of storing instructions on how to render frames, rather than actually holding frames on it.
The chip in the graphics card does the work, frames only really pass through, rather than sitting on the VRAM.
It doesnt perform the same kind of function that RAM does.

It is very, very, very unlikely you will max out the VRAM, even the heaviest games rarely go over 8GB.
Even the link you gave (which is the previous generation cards) its only on 4K ultra high settings that it reaches 9GB on a 2080...the 30 series are a BIG improvement on the previous generation, that figure will have dropped.

PC Specialst only offer just the one cheap option there I am afraid (I cant be bothered to so a self build on this). Can you say more on the Vram: surely if a card tops out its VRAM that would have implications for speed, and this is for a 5120 x 1400 display and highest detail settings. Recommendations I have read have been concerned about MSFS exceeding 10GB VRAM et https://www.guru3d.com/articles_pag..._graphics_performance_benchmark_review,4.html

Do you feel that would not impact performance if VRAM demand exceeded 10GB on a 3080? Obviously if not then Id save money (I had intended to get a 3080 but the VRAM is the deciding issue at present)
It is CPU memory (RAM) that will be doing all of your loading for those things.

If you are worried about VRAM and 3080 waiting times, i would advise the 6800XT and the 6900XT

PCS are an open chassis policy, you can buy fans seperately and install and it wont void it.
Fans are also very easy to install.

Yes may do. I've deleted the cheapo fan. Thanks for everyones help. Im still hovering over whether so save £800 by 'only' having a 3080 GPU I gather when DX12 comes out it will be VRAM heavy though and MSFS is going to be using it. Hmm.

Interesting I will price up an AMD alternative and think about it. TBH I suspect Intel and AMD would come out much the same but interested to look at the pricing.

Well, this alternative AMD spec comes in at £3765 inc VAT which is basically same cost as the other spec. There is some evidence online that the AMD5950X is a bit faster on MSFS but that possibly Intel has it by a nose (insignificantly) at 4k resolution, so Im proably sticking with the Intel. Still hovering on the 3080 vs 3090.
Signing off now but I have appreciated the help and wont now have a PC which melts from the heat...

If you are set on intel, at least wait for 11th gen to launch

Also, i wouldn’t recommend that Gigabyte board, it’s their budget one i think.

11th gen still uses the old architecture, until they completely refresh their design and move to 7nm I dont think they'll catch up at all and whatever vickycat is reading that says Intel is keeping up with AMD here... i'd be suspicious that its from an Intel sponsored youtuber or some other source.

Not so sure about the 5950X, its not a gaming CPU, although I know MSFS2020 does seem more CPU bound than most.
There is still the issue with the 3090, which I really dont think you are taking for the right reasons, and i'm cerrtainly not convinced you need more than a 3080. I wouldnt suggest a 850W PSU with a 3090 card either, very little headroom, I would prefer a 1000W so theres that breathing room to get the max lifespan out of it. Perhaps @SpyderTracks or @ubuysa may have better luck, their knowledge is amazing on this stuff.

Also, you dont overclock AMD chips, they have built in overclocking, putting your own in often reduces the performance, particularly on single core.

Anyway, i'm not paying the bill here, so its up to you. We dont seem to be getting through to you a total lot.

Regardless of architecture, 11th gen will still be betting than 10th gen and it’s will be available before OP gets their pc
True, but i'd still be far happier putting my money on AMD.
As I said, I cant see them catching up in any meaningful way until they follow suit and move to 7nm themselves.

In gaming i’d expect 11th gen to edge out Ryzen again to be honest. It’s every other aspect where they fall short, but with AMD price hikes and lack of supply, i can see an intel resurgence unfortunately.

Fortunately for me, my pc is for more than just gaming, so my 5800X will never be killed by an intel cpu 🤪.

Just to add to this... my friends with intel, struggle with basic things like... gaming with friends, as people joining party chats causes them to have lag spikes 🤣 (9700k too so not a weak chip)

Sibun1: not at all, you're certainly helping and assisting my thoughts and Ive changed case and cooler thanks to help here. Thing is, I do find quite a few references to that Vram on the 3080 and the forthcoming DX12 and to cities such as LA and New York exceeding 10GB in VRAM which I think causes a sudden stutter rather than a frame rate difference due to a sudden throttle on the speed for a short time). I hadnt however appreciated that VRAM was solely an instruction/maths buffer - however that would scale with detail and screen etc anyhow. I dont think the main board is budget - its not their top end but it has very solid 90Amp stages for power which is pretty good if one is wanting an overclock and to keep heat down, and it gets good reviews. I've had ASUS ROG and MSI boards before and they are ok too. Im not expecting to fiddle too much with this set up in terms of post purchase overclocking since I have resolved to spend time flying not tweaking as happened with my last setup.

It all beats 3.5k on my Vic-20 though :)

PS Ash, thanks for your observation re my original spec, I think the feedback here has been v useful on the heat front. I do actually have a very nice Lian Li Shell 20th edition special case but I just dont want the trouble of sending it to have PCspecialist fit the kit, so opted unwisely for a cheap box. Happier with the bette one. I have a poor record with water cooling. My cat got into my last PC whilst the cover was off, and detached the water tubing somehow. Cue dead board and damp cat. Wonder if cats are AMD or Intel (or Commodore or Sinclair lol):.

The Lian Li 2 Mesh is an insanely high performing case, i think the panels can be swapped out on the one you specced and the mesh panel

Hi Having just ordered a PC myself for simming (X-Plane 11 ) I went with an AMD processor and an RX 6800XT with 16GB of Memory on board. Running at 4K my existing setup loads around 10GB of textures( takes about 4mins at start ), the requirements are slightly different to other games, with no high speed action, but tons of textures. I am hoping AMD's SAM is going to improve texture loading times significantly. Good Luck.

Thanks Dudbro I will post here when I eventually get this up and running. The GPUs are hard to get so am going to have a wait. Screen arrived today however, slightly used off Amazon for just under 1k for a Samsung G9.
