Optimus V Fan Noise

Everybody do yourself a favour and stop waiting for pcs to sort this issue out as it has been over a year and they clearly are not going to! Download and install the prema mod bios already discussed - you will never look back! I installed it a few months ago and it resolves the issue instantly. I wish I had done it sooner - the fan was driving me bonkers. An added bonus is it gives u a lot more options and functionality within the bios. Simples!

I would imagine it's more to do with the manufacturer of the chassis rather than PCS.

I've had the bios update and it doesn't really do much when in Optimus mode (VGA button orange).

BUT, i have noticed something today after owning the laptop for over a year and putting up with the 100% fan noise.

If i manually enable the integrated gpu mode by pressing the VGA button (VGA green, UMA power setting) then i can use the laptop normally and it's dead silent. No fan noise at all.

So I did some tests with totally default NVIDIA Control Panel settings and when in Optimus mode (auto switching) the lights indicate that the integrated GPU is being used (green light on the indicators, top 4 lights) but the fan starts blasting again.

So i dont really know what this means, could be an issue with the NVIDIA GPU switching?

I have the latest nvidia drivers, same with the clevo drivers.

Having said all of the above, i'm going to flash the BIOS with the prema mod. I don't want to keep manually switching the GPU's each and every time i use it.

It's a shame that Clevo couldn't do this, or embarrassing rather.

Quick update, i've installed the prema BIOS with no issues at all. Fan is no longer running at 100%, i can barely hear it now.

I also decided to take a look at the thermal paste on the CPU and also clear out any dust in the fan.

The fan had a layer of thick dust, something to check if you're getting the load fan.

More importantly, the thermal paste hasn't been applied properly by pcspecialst, I'll be cleaning this and applying a fresh layer soon!!!

Does this loud fan issue still affect the Optimus V laptops currently being produced by PCS? I'm asking as I have recently ordered the 15.6" Optimus V from PCS, which is still in the "processing" phase of the order. However after reading this thread, I am considering cancelling the order altogether, and going for a completely different laptop model. Any advice you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated!

I have seen a few threads highlighting the fan issue and others not having the issue. If you can afford going for he vortex chassis I would consider the upgrade.

Anyone got a tutorial for installing Prema for the Optimus V for the non technical person? do i need to get a specific version for the Optimus V laptop?

thanks.

I finally updated my bios after years of putting up with the ridiculous fan noise, and despite the bios installing absolutely fine, the laptop won't now boot from my ssd.

Has anyone else had this issue? I'm wondering whether the fact it's Windows 10 has anything to do with it. Really hope someone has managed to resolve the same issue as I've held out doing it for soon and now I couldn't be anymore gutted.

I don't think we should have such promotion of prema mod on this forum as if people start flashing there are going to be bricks as has already happened.

There are a long list of users with this update installed so I don't think its an unreasonable question on the forum.

The laptop isn't bricked, it still boots from USB and the CD drive. It isn't booting from the HDD that the OS is installed on, which was what my question was relating to. Maybe I should have been more specific.

It's against forum rules as it's not an official bios and the risks of bricking your device are high.

And installing it probably voids the warranty whilst you're at it (I think it more than likely does but I don't work at PCS so cant be 100% sure)

Fair enough; I was just operating under the proviso that the thread managed to get to 35 pages before without anyone mentioning it being against the rules. If that's the case then I can understand it.

For what it's worth, I've managed to get the laptop working again after much swearing by reinstalling the old firmware, so if anyone does have an issue then I may be offer to help.

The forum rules do not specifically prohibit the discussion or the use of non-standard BIOS code, so personally I don't see this as being against the forum rules. It is very important to remember however, that a very large number of forum members are not very experienced technically and the reputation of these fora is such that what we say here is often taken as being 'the right thing to do'.

I think it's extremely unwise for us to create the impression that flashing a new BIOS is a 'normal' activity, or that it's a trivial process. IMO we certainly do not want to create the impression that a BIOS upgrade is something that should be done as a normal part of troubleshooting and we absolutely should not be seen to recommend or endorse non-standard BIOS updates, because they will invalidate any warranty.

Whenever I have posted about BIOS updates I always add a 'don't do this at home' disclaimer.
