PSA: AMD AM5 issue with over voltage requiring BIOS update

Yeah I've watched all the GN videos!

Hopefully this latest BIOS has sorted it out in that regard. Considering I couldn't even turn on EXPO before without a yellow DRAM light it seems to have done something right.

EXPO I is typically looser timing on the RAM, EXPO II tends to be a little tighter. The smoke is caused by ASUS also adjusting voltages in the profiles as well.

I don't know if they have now gone back to traditional EXPO configurations, where all that changes is the RAM and 2 voltages, but I would stick with EXPO I if it works for you, it's less aggressive.

If you wanted to do a trial, which would do absolutely no harm, try all 4 settings and measure with a benchmark. My guess is you will see a significant increase with EXPO I with slightly increased performance over the remaining 2 options. I don't think the increase is significant enough to warrant using them, but mileage will vary. I wouldn't actually be surprised if you saw a decrease in performance in all honesty, it depends how tight the profiles try to pull the timings.

From what I'm reading the latest BIOS offerings are all good so far. I've not installed it yet, but that's the word on the street. Just for anyone thinking of updating :)

The RAM modules will store two EXPO profiles, so you’re just selecting one of them. Usually the first one is the optimal one so if you have EXPO I selected your good.

This isn't true unfortunately. If you have a view of the linked vid from @SpyderTracks you will see how Asus have convoluted the situation :)

I'm not sure if you're following. Even out-with the on-going voltage taboo, ASUS make further changes when selecting the EXPO profiles. They should really call it something other than EXPO as when selecting these profiles there's a number of additional changes made (not relating to the current on-going problems). With the issues aside, other manufacturers to my knowledge, follow the RAM profile settings without further adjustments being made.

Did you watch the video?

There's 2 separate issues. One was the overviltage being assigned by the AMD agesa which was locked down to 1.3V although some manufacturers over rode this.

Then there's a separate issue with AMD not confirming to EXPO standards.

EXPO doesn't affect SOC voltages in any way, but ASUS are manipulating voltages on EXPO 2 which is outside of what EXPO is.

A GN wrap up, there's an interesting interview with a lawyer who goes through their warranty terms and raises some interesting things

I watched it last night and forgot to post it up 😂

I'll admit, I got really bored with the lawyer bit but I'm sure it's more interesting for some.

It's more level headed in the delivery this time, which I think is important as it's time to calm things down. They messed up big time but time to move forward, as GN are doing also 😊

This is well worth a watch, wrap up from Gamers Nexus and KitGuru at Computex on the overall Asus debacles

I find the contrast between the PC and professionalism of the US rep to the brashness and the “just have at it” attitude from the UK very funny!

Hey guys,

I received a call from pcs saying that for my build:

The max RAM frequency they can achieve is 5000Mhz. Is this also related to the problems associated with the BIOS?

Is it worth downgrading to the frequency or is this CPU related?

Thanks

This is a temporary issue with the current BIOS and AMD are working on a proper fix.

I would just order with the minimum 8gb and then source your own 6000MHz pair, 5000mhz is far too slow, but if you order 6000 now and just disable EXPO in the BIOS until they've fixed it, then you just reenable EXPO to 6000MHz

But there's absolutely no reason to swap the processor, this is just a temporary issue.

I like that idea, with there being so many different RAM out there at 6000MHz with different clock speeds, which is the best to buy? Below is a list compatible with my TUF X670E:
