PSA: AMD AM5 issue with over voltage requiring BIOS update

Oh, I thought that was with EXPO on, didn't realise it was affecting him with it off.
Yeah on or off it's the same thing.

Had a look at list of supported memory for the ASUS 670E TUF Gaming WiFi and the 6000mhz 40-40-40-77 XMP is not listed.

I think they may have put one in by accident that the motherboard doesn't work with.

Going by the following page the only XMP supported 6000mhz kits are 36-36-36-76. Could also be the issue.

I'll say this in the RMA too once PCS get back to me.

It's Corsair memory BTW. There are some other brands supported at that speed bit not Corsair by the looks of it.

I think you may be going down a rabbit hole with the RAM compatibility etc. Can you type the actual model number of the RAM to check it? The timings that you're seeing aren't the spec of the RAM, it's just what the timings are set to being displayed/defined.

They don't list OEM parts, only retail ones.
That's the RAM in my system I received. It's not listed as being supported on my motherboard.

This is the pair, both the same. Still not listed as being supported on my motherboard.
Like I said, the part number for the pair is always going to be different. It wont be on the individual sticks. The information I listed is what you should check for the compatibility of your board.

So I had a look on the ASUS site for CountingDowns motherboard (ROG STRIX X670E-A GAMING WIFI) and it supports the 40-40-40-77 RAM which I'm assuming why there are no issues there.

From everything I've seen my motherboard doesn't so the RAM in my system is what's causing the issue.

I'll ask PCS to verify with their tech team but looks like this is my root cause.

Hey, it happens. Hopefully I won't have to send the whole system back and they can send out RAM that is QLV rated for my system.

Gotta love PC hardware!

Attached is the QLV Corsair 6000mhz RAM for my motherboard, one I got in my system isn't listed.

This is fairly standard. Not every RAM kit will be listed as compatible. Not being on the list doesn't mean it's not compatible, it just means it's not been confirmed yet. The fact that it's compatible with the other boards suggests they just haven't gotten around to adding it yet.

The timings & frequency are much looser without the XMP/EXPO switched on, so it would be even more likely to be stable and compatible. The only RAM considerations I would have would be if the RAM was faulty or was of a slightly lesser quality and needed more voltage to run stable.... which wasn't being provided by the stock, non XMP setting.

PCS would typically only make compatible RAM available, they typically test all the variations before offering them so I doubt it's anything to do with compatibility or lists.

So was in touch with support. Had me run Memtest86 and got no errors back (in one pass, may run a few passes).

They had me try the system with video from the motherboard so I did this and disabled the graphics card. Ran fine, loaded some games. Slow FPS but they ran.

Plugged in the graphics card and crashed within 5 mins.

Could be the culprit and that the RAM EXPO issues are BIOS related.

Hopefully it's that and a replacement GPU will fix it. Fingers crossed anyway.

New BIOS out today (non BETA) for my board. Hopefully resolves a few more issues. Seems to have some memory specific stuff around QVL and EXPO/XMP.

TUF GAMING X670E-PLUS WIFI BIOS 1616
Version 1616
9.14 MB
2023/05/16
"1. Update AGESA version to Combo AM5 PI 1.0.0.7.a
2. Support 48/24GB high-density DDR5 memory module.
3. Memory QVL amended to account for AMD 1.3V SoC voltage limit.
4. EXPO/XMP prompt notice removed.
Before running the USB BIOS Flashback tool, please rename the BIOS file (TX670ELW.CAP) using BIOSRenamer."

Weirdly my BIOS is 1410 which on the ASUS site shows as a beta. Queried this and they've sent me 1413 today via email to update my PC.

I can't see this on their website. I have the same board.

7a is the AMD fixes to the AGESA, I think this is an important BIOS for anyone to update. Did you check the QVL list to see if there were changes?

Where are you looking? Are you on a non-UK site?

It can sometimes be regional.
